*Question Aboout Transmissions*

So, as stupid as this might sound because I love the 10 speed transmission, but i have had a change of heart in the plans with my car. I REALLY want to just full on slap a new crank and piston rod combo in it, and bolt it up to a basic built trans and slap a big ole turbo on it.

My question regarding transmissions is, what transmissions could fit up to the Gen V LT1? Are there any conversion kits to throw a built 4L80 in it?

What are my options? There has to be something out there that i can do.

I’m going to go out a on a limb with what I know of turbo motors & the close ratios of the A10, & say unless you are going north of 1KWHP, they would work very well together.

At that level a built TH400 or Powerglide is probably in your future.

Thats what i was thinking. Ive been trying to do some research and look at the pro and cons between the powerglide and a TH400. Whats your opinion?

Turbo 400 is a 3 speed auto and Powerglide 2 speed. You definitely will have to change your rear end gear ratio due to the reduction of gears in the trans.

Honestly, I can’t imagine running either. I feel like it would turn the car into a drag-only project and I don’t want to do that, even though I’m at 1K HP at the crank with more coming soon (LPE +52 injectors and BB HPFP). The A8 handles it and when it doesn’t it’ll get a Rankin build. Just my 2 cents.

Oh for sure. Just not sure what ratio yet. still a lot of R and D i have to do. I'll probably do some research on what has worked well in the past with other racers or builders

Right. i definitely see where you're coming from. To be completely honest, if i had a way to put a trans brake on my current trans (A10) i would probably push the trans to its absolute limit and id blow it to bits before getting a new trans. Because i love the 10 speed. But unfortunately, there isn't and option for a trans brake for my trans.

The closest thing i have to that would be my stall converter and my 2 step (which even with the 2 step i still spin before i can get it to 3500, and i cant turn on traction control or else it wont let me rev past like 1500)

Ok, so are we talking 7’s with a scalpel or 7’s with a sledge hammer?

If you had the 8L90 or 10L90, I’d say running a 7 after a full on trans build is a possibility. With the lower torque rating of the 10L80 in the newer SS coupled with the fact that I don’t know anyone beefing those up yet and it’s hard to think that transmission is going to do what you want unfortunately.

If You can get the car below 2800 Lbs a Powerglide will work, If not, a TH400 is your best bet. By installing either of these, The Drivability on the street is NOT Good!!! Stay with the 10 spd. and when it breaks fix it!!!
