Honest question for someone who is beginning to consider a more 'track' oriented prep.

What is the thinking about Fixed back racing seats + just a harness bar?

I was talking with a couple of the NASA safety guys at Roebling a few weeks ago and they both bluntly stated that is a recipe for death.

If the car rolls, the roof is designed to give a fixed amount to absorb impact energy and the OEM seat is designed to break-away flat.

A fixed seat and harness bar would conceivably transfer all that energy into the driver, right?

It would seem if you are tracking, and make the move to a racing seat, you gotta go rollbar.

Am I missing something?

Thanks.

I would agree that information is on par with things I have heard and read.

Reason I went with a roll bar was when I sit in the car with my helmet on I can fit like a finger between my helmet and roof. The roof will collapse a lot farther than a finger without a roll bar.

I've heard similar about you should have a roll bar if doing fixed seats and a lot of other things I should do. Not to mention the Camaro doesn't have the best rollover rating. I'll add it to the list with blowing the airbags for no reason and helmet not fitting thru the window opening etc.

yup i have always been told if you do fixed back seats and harness you want at least a 4 point cage you can do harness bar and street style racing seats for like auto x or street car but if it sees actually track time best to do full or half cage if you rollover the seats wont fold and you will die lol
