Key Fob Programing

SO I purchased a wrecked 2018 ZL1 without a Key or Key Fob....

Had my Dealership make me a laser cut key

Purchased a used Key Fob from a 2017 ZL1 Camaro

Now trying to reprogram the replacement used Key Fob and it will not "sync" with my car????

I can get it into the "Learn" mode but will not complete the process when I put the used Key Fob in the smaller back cup holder...

Any Ideas / Suggestions?

If there are no currently recognized transmitters available, follow this procedure to program up to eight transmitters. This feature is not available in Canada. This procedure will take approximately 30 minutes to complete. The vehicle must be off and all of the transmitters to be programmed must be with you.

1. Remove the key lock cylinder cap on the driver door handle. Insert the vehicle key of the transmitter into the key lock cylinder on the driver door handle and turn the key to the unlock position five times within 10 seconds. The Driver Information Center (DIC) displays REMOTE LEARN PENDING, PLEASE WAIT.

2. Wait for 10 minutes until the DIC displays PRESS ENGINE START BUTTON TO LEARN and then press ENGINE START/STOP. The DIC display will again show REMOTE LEARN PENDING, PLEASE WAIT.

3. Repeat Step 2 two additional times. After the third time, all previously known transmitters will no longer work with the vehicle. Remaining transmitters can be relearned during the next steps. The DIC display should now show READY FOR REMOTE # 1.

4. Place the new transmitter into the rear cupholder in the center console.

5. Press ENGINE START/STOP. When the transmitter is learned, the DIC will show that it is ready to program the next transmitter.

6. Remove the transmitter from the cupholder and press Lock or Unlock. To program additional transmitters, repeat Steps 4 thru 6.

YEP performed these exact steps several times BUT when I get to step 6 nothing happens. I’m trying to verify IF a used key fob can be reprogrammed or if I need to purchase a new one for $175......

But thanks for your help

No offense, but have you put a new battery in the used fob you bought? These fobs are notorious for having battery issues.

I had to replace the battery in one of mine when it was only 1 year old.

Just a suggestion.

You don't need to buy a new one from GM for $175
I programmed a third fob for both my 17 Camaro and my wife's Cruze with new fobs purchased on Ebay for about 35 to 45 bucks each. Just try to make sure the seller has a reputable rating. A local locksmith duplicated the mechanical key cut in the blank for $25 each.

What is the Battery? I need to see if this is available in my area now before it goes out. Thanks

Good to hear Ebay fobs can work perfectly. We'll be working on buddy's incoming 2017 Camaro after we finished installing the brake kit and black rhino wheels on the current Silverado project and clear the garage. The car was involved in an accident needs a new set of headlights and turn signal lights, then will need to get anew fob key.

The remote (key fob) for our cars has a CR2032 battery inside of it.

I picked up a 10 pack of them from Amazon pretty cheap. I like to have spares...

I think the key point here is you have a working key fob or two and added another fob.....

To clarify I don’t have a key fob - zero so it’s a different process which I’m having problems with...

I understand and feel your pain.. Just letting you know that it is possible to get fobs programmed yourself without spending $175 each.

But keep in mind, the fobs I bought were listed as brand new, never used. You are attempting to reprogram a used fob from a '17 car. I have not seen a definitive answer that a used fob from another car can or cannot be reprogrammed by the method shown in the owners manual. The reprogramming may be locked out for security purposes.

Does anyone else know the answer to this?

So when you did this process and inserted the 1st key fob as instructed into the back smaller cup holder and then pressed the start button - how long is the wait afterwards?

My system never comes back after inserting key fob #1 to insert #2 key fob or terminate the programming process....
