Poor Man’s grill air scoop

I had the front clip off for a new grill and decided to take a look at doing the Velosa intake scoop. I removed the plastic blocking piece and modified it to work as an air deflector, not so much a scoop. I modified the blocking piece by cutting the long portion off, drilling some holes, and using zip ties on the black brace. First pic is before I cut the piece for reference. Second pic is finished product. Took all of 15 minutes complete! I don’t know if it will make a difference or not but I figured what the hell, might as well try it.

I did the "mini mouth" mod too. Except I just took the one body rivet off the inner portion and rolled it back and rested it against the back side of the grille.

The butt-o-meter didn't notice a difference, but I do know the ram air effect is real and does boost HP.

$170. for a .25 cent piece of plastic seems a little ridiculous to me.
One of these days I'll pull the fascia and design something out of sheet metal or something.

I'd recommend putting it at a 45* angle to funnel it towards the opening.
Think of taking a hose and squirting it at a plate. The water will bounce everywhere.

Since air behaves like a fluid, that is what is happening right now as you drive down the road.

Looks like it’s about a 30 degree angle towards the intake right now. I’ll try to get it more at 45 if I can.

I was able to move the left end out toward the grill and added a zip tie at the upper right. It’s pretty close to 45 degrees and is more direct into the air box.

So after looking at it I realized that my piece was too low below the upper grill opening to have any affect. I added more of a backer ant top piece so it can capture directly behind the grill opening. It’s about a 30 degree angle towards the air intake.

The one thing I will tell you is to watch for Hydrolocking your motor in deep water or heavy rain. I saw many stalled cars last May in Naples....they drowned themselves out.

Those deflectors are there for a reason.

With a Roto you just drill a bigger drain hole.

I had a velossatech and recently took it off due to the extra air/bad maf making the car go into limp mode at high speeds near the top of 4th. Just left mine open, not as good as the velossatech or your poor man scoop but didn't want to deal with the limp mode anymore.

Is your car tuned or stock?

It's stock, with GM CAI and the MAF recalibration. The first time it happened I thought I just hit fuel cut off because I was really close to redline and sometimes the HUD tach isn't the most accurate. The next time it seemed like maybe I hit fuel cut off again but wasn't sure, but the third and last time it happened I was only in the high 120s not at redline. I can't imagine the speedo can be that far off.

I only had the code read the first time, it was a fuel pressure commanded vs actual code which made sense if I hit fuel cutoff. The 2nd and 3rd time I did not get the code read, just turned the car off and back on and it was fine. Also when I went to get the code checked again a few days later they told me they couldn't read it after it's gone because the car doesn't store them, which is news to me.

Regardless I took it off when I went to get it checked out the second time and now I'm leaving it off to confirm that it was the issue. I did one pull to the low 130s and it was fine, but it also didn't always do it so the jury is still out.

I do know that people with GM CAIs have said it's got rougher MAF readings so maybe the Velossatech and GM CAI don't like to consistently play nicely together. I did clean my filter out recently so I might go back in there and make sure the MAF clocking didn't get skewed (another GM CAI feature I don't like). After the 2nd time it went into limp mode, I ran personal bests at the strip (was on my way there when it happened and I knew from the previous time that after turning it off and on it'd be fine) so I don't think there is actually anything wrong with the car, just the MAF signal.

Right now I have the block off deflector off so I imagine some of the Velossatech advantages are still at play vs deflector still on.

Fun fact, after it happened I still raced it at the strip to the surprise of some on my convoy because the car is under warranty and after it happened the first time the dealer didn't bother digging into it and said it was fine after I explained I hit fuel cutoff and the code was fuel pressure related, they chalked it up to an error. So I said **** it and raced anyways, that's what track warranties are for lol

My car is FBO so it has a tune but it’s getting re-tuned in the Spring for e85. Hopefully the tune will prevent what you were seeing. I have a RotoFab which should play nice with added air.

ssmike after NOCO sold to speedway the E85 in Buffalo went to Sh*T. I didnt see better than 60% and most was around 50%. I dont think speedway will keep it.
