Roof Weld

I bought a new 2020 Camaro last month (July 2020 build). A couple days ago I noticed what's in the photos below. The area in the photos is on the passenger side at the joint between the roof panel and just past where the A-pillar turns toward the rear of the car over the door. The window in the photos is the top passenger corner of the windshield.

Whatever it is is under the paint, but I'm not sure what it is. Welding slag, seam sealer, rust,... It's about two inches from the corner of the windshield to the end of the visible defect.

Also, a little concerning is how much gap there is the corner between the metal and the weather-stripping. Maybe that's well within GM-normal tolerance, but the corner on the driver side has nearly no gap.

The selling dealer is a few hundred miles away, so I'm trying to research the body shops Chevy dealers in my area use to help decide which one to take it to. While I do that, I thought someone where might have had or knows of similar issues.

I'd like to have a better idea of both what it may be and what the likely fixes could be before bringing it in. My guess is the range is anything from some grinding, a little filler and paint up through a roof panel replacement.

Has anyone else had a similar issue? Does anyone have any ideas what it might be?

Thanks!

Agree!! That’s ugly and I would definitely take it in to the dealer.

The roof is laser welded (no ditch molding to cover up the spot welds). It looks like seam sealer as you guessed.

Totally unacceptable. I can't believe this wasn't caught during PDI. I can't tell you what GM will do to rectify this for you, but you may be looking at repair by a dealership. If it were me, I'd probably be pushing for a new car.

Not only is it ugly but it won't allow water to flow away as designed and may cause rust/corrosion down the road. Definitely make them take care of it. I don't know how in the world that passed the QC check.

Thanks for the responses so far. Guess it's a good thing that it's not a widespread problem.

Agree that it never should have shipped looking like this. Shouldn't have made it to paint looking like that either. But it did, the dealer didn't catch it...and then I bought it and I didn't see it until days later.

I'm not worried about "ugly" since it won't be after it's fixed. I'm just hoping to get a better idea of what that fix might entail before it goes in so I can have a better conversation with the shop...and, if necessary, Chevy/GM. It was disappointing to find, but not knowing what happened, what the fix is, and not having a window to take it somewhere for a while is annoying.

Keep us updated.

I guess it will be something I will have to inspect after I order my car.

Just wondering if there's an update on this. I'm wondering what GM's resolution for this is.

It was excess seam sealer that should have been caught and cleaned up before paint.

Body shop cleaned it up, resprayed a small area with base coat, and re-cleared the roof panel. Orange peel of the new clear matches the rest of the car. Can only tell anything was done with a paint meter.

I agree! It should've never made it out of the plant like that.

Glad to hear it was resolved fairly easily.
