Yep, no tune = no gain with pretty much any mod - or I should say, no permanent gain. You might see an immediate bump if you install and immediately put it on the dyno but the computer will tune around it over time so $300 for less than 5 rwhp doesn't sound like a bargain to me. Tuning will run you a few hundred dollars at least and you lose the warranty so no real reason to move off the stock setup until you are going to do other mods and get them all tuned together.

That said, the GM setup that includes a tune could be worth while but, from what I have heard, they don't tune to enhance performance just to ensure you don't get a CEL. Same A/F and other parameters so not sure the gains are maximized based on the cost. You do get to keep the warranty though so that's a plus.

That makes sense. I did not recall seeing any mad raves about how much added power you get from the GM CAI with included tune.

The forum favorite does seem to be the rotofab based on looks, cost, and ease of installation.

I installed the K&N 71-3092 Blackhawk Air Intake on my 2016 1SS, I love it - easily installed, sounds better, definite improvement.

Rocky do you feel any type of power gain at all?

I have the 71-3092 K&N on mine. I noticed it was a little louder, but I did not feel any other performance gains. No check engine light or any other problems. The one pain in the ass thing with this system is you get a whistling sound when you accelerate.

Over the years I've really come to understand how the air intake works on modern cars. The fact is, cold air intakes really don't give you much more horsepower. They just make the car a little louder. Air intakes on modern cars - especially with our Camaros - is already a cold air intake, and the mass airflow sensor and electric throttle body work in combination with the computer and throttle pedal input to deliver the precise amount of airflow as required by the engine.

This will remain constant whether you have the stock airbox and factory air filter or an aftermarket intake and K&N filter.

Cold air intakes and K&N filters made a real performance difference in OLD engines, when the air intake was a simple cover on top of the carburetor in the engine bay, and it was sucking in hot ambient air from the engine bay. But we're talking old cars, over 25 years old.

You really need to go back to the early 80s Camaros, before fuel injection, to find them without a factory cold air intake. Once they went fuel injection the air intakes were run to the front of the car next to the headlamp assembly.

Yes. Most cars also have some sort of intake baffling and the combination of this plus the intake design/filter tends to silence much of the noise that can escape through the intake. Once you put on an aftermarket intake, you hear more noise. You think the car is making more power because there's more noise. The noise is more responsive to your pedal. It's not so much that the factory system is the pinnacle of airflow optimization, it's that the entire engine operates as a system and it's controlled by the computers.

Youre not winning or losing a race based on your cai selection. They all make false claims about whp gains. K@N is a very popular cai.Really comes down to the one you like the most and is at your price point.

Right, the intake pipe itself isn’t the factor, it’s the complete engine management system, which DOES adjust the most optimal use of airflow on a continuous basis.
