Do Long tube headers cause cabin noise?
Hey guys, do your guys headers make noise inside the cabin? I’m not talking about drone, but like a ticking sound when you’re cruising at normal speeds? I have the A8. Wondering if I have an exhaust leak. I can hear it with the windows down, and it’s more noticeable in the driver side. I’ve had the headers on for 5 months now, and I’ve noticed the ticking has gotten louder? Any ideas? Thank you

You sure it's not just the direct injection? I'd imagine the headers would amplify that sound greatly.

Headers will make additional noise. When I wrapped mine it cut the noise down substantially.

It's probably an exhaust leak if it has become increasingly and noticeably louder since the install. If it's barely louder, it's most likely normal.

Will the exhaust leak cause a CEL or cause the car to lose performance? And if it is a leak, will the headers need to be removed completely?

I know the headers will become a bit loose overtime since the engine moves and stuff like that, but not sure if it’s just the direct injection noise or an actual exhaust leak. A reputable shop in my area installed The headers and Tuned the car. it made the same ticking sound The same day I picked up the car with the tune and headers installed and my tuner did not mention it or anything so I assumed it was normal. So now debating if it’s just the DI sound or an actual exhaust leak, or a lifter failure :(

I hope its not the dreaded lifter issue.. My long tubes didnt add ticking noise, but the normal engines noises are very ticky.. I heard something new a couple weeks back - and she is in the shop.

I have had the same issue, I thought I did and still do have an exhaust leak. I took it to an exhaust shop that was too busy too look at it, but they said at least with kooks ball and socket type connections leak alot. So I went under my car that weekend and I can't find any dark spots are soot around any of the connection points. It may be just the headers allowing sound to pass I guess. But I hear it under the the driver side side floor board, not a rattle like metal on metal, but maybe keys jingling together or a ticking sound.

Yea bro, and you’d imagine that $2,000 long tubes would be flawless, but I have seen your posts a while back and still see you’re still going through that exhaust leak issue. I have speed engineering headers myself. Being in California, I know someone that has a connection at speed engineering and he was able to get me a pair with the long tubes and x pipe for $600, and honestly can’t complain. Good quality. Got these in June when they were all sold out too, and I think they’re still on back order.

You can get a mechanic stethoscope, or make your own, I prefer to make my own out of 3/16 or 1/4 brake line & hose, you just put the hose on your earlobe & press it into your ear, & while it’s running listen around every joint circumferentially. If there is a leak it will sound like a whooshing noise.
You can also listen to each individual pipe to see if your ticking becomes louder in time with what you are hearing. |
