Matching RE71Rs for ZlE
So I got myself in a bit of a pickle by leaping before I fully checked inventory.
I bought the car with Cup2's in stock ZLE sizes. Fronts were worn and corded quicker then I thought. Didn't want to go Cup2s again, so I purchased RE71Rs for the front thinking I would go to the 355 V720 ACR rears as a couple here have done successfully. Unfortunately, those tires are pretty much on backorder indefinitely. Well got the front tires on just so I could drive the car, and the rear Cup2s still have tread but are deff heat cycled pretty bad. Bringing it out on spirited back roads the car actually felt great, but could get the rear end loose, which means on the track tomorrow I'm expecting the car to be really loose at the rear. So now that I have the Re71s up front, which I like BTW quite a bit. I need a good match to the rears. Basically I'm thinking the 100 TW R compounds (Nt-01/R888R, etc) will take longer to warm then the Re71r. So maybe not the best fit for the softer compound fronts. So for rears, maybe go Cup 2 again in 345/30/19, or stock rears? Again lookin to see if anyone has a better idea for getting me through this less then ideal scenario. |

dont recommend to mix and match compounds do they not make a re71R in your size for the rear?

Have run mixed setups before with better grip rears and no issue (cup2/g3r and nankang ar1/g3r combos) other than feel. I always run higher grip (lower treadwear) tires on rear and take very conservative 2-3 warm-up laps with only straight line accel & decel - maybe even in track "dry" if track temps are less than 50f for extra safe corner exit. No experience with the 71r but it is a 200 treadwear so r888r, cup2, nt01, g3R rears should do the trick since they r less than 200. I am sure u know to watch that corner exit throttle for first 3 laps with any angle in the steering wheel...

It is very similar to RE71R in grip imo - albeit it will take longer to warm up, so as suggested above perhaps start in PTM Dry. Cheers! |

The same size RE71R fits fine on the rear 19x12, why not just run them all-around?

Shockingly I dropped 2 seconds off my best time and while the Re71Rs did get too hot after 5-6 hard 1:30 or so laps in a row, so did the Cup2s in similar enough fashion that the age of the tires front to back mattered more then the mix in compounds.
If you hadn't told me I would have never known that they were different compounds. So just in case anyone's ever in the same pinch. They work surprisingly well together. I think I'll just run this for the rest of the season (only 2 maybe 3 days left) and re-evaluate over winter. Thanks for the help guys. Last edited by NEZL1; 10-23-2020 at 07:32 PM. |
