will cam create problems for road course

hey guys, i'm really wanting to have that nice cam sound, a little bump in power, but not chasing any numbers, and want the car to still work on the road course. this will also be a fun project for dad and I, not a full out max effort build. (although i'm sure i'll swap oil pump out while we have engine out)

i see issues with pulley and header combos, and i want to see if anyone has ran just a cam/headers combo and gotten away with it.

my car spends most it's time on the street, but will make the track 3-5 times a year....and i want it to work when it does.

any advice is appreciated,

why would it cause a problem? tons of full hci and fbo cars that road course my buddy had a 1le that made 520whp on cam fbo and e85 and he tracked the shit out of his car

I’m not sure if it creates too much extra heat or not, i know the headers do, but i don’t see very many opting for cams for track work. Could be labor costs, or could be something I’m missing...that’s why I’m asking

i am full bolt ons and tune and i track my car and no problems i would love to do full hci also 500whp na would be perfect for the road course but not trying to spend $5000k

I hear ya on that...it’ll save me $2500 on labor if me and pops do it.

I have just been reading where some zl1 guys are having heat problems, and i don’t want to mess up the track-ability of the car, but do want to have that sweet sweet cam sound. (Just came from coyote/voodoo world and ya cant get that sound with them...unless it’s fake lol)

aww forgot you have a zl1 1le my bad lol and dont think zl1 1le guys had issues with heatsoak it was mostly the c7 z06 guys and that all got fixed

No problem, any and all advice welcome. TBH, a FBO SS1LE would be an absolute riot at my local track. The more i go, the more i realize the ZLE is way overkill for my skill level...but i enjoy the DD aspect too, and i want that idle. Not asking for much right lol

haha me and my buddy bob were just at track a few weeks ago i have a modified 1ss he has a stock 1le and our time were pretty much the same and i asked him can you imagine having and extra 200hp and full aero and he said no he would probably kill himself haha and what track is it? we have around 5 tracks in socal so its nice!

Lol yeah if i were buying one for this track, i wont lie...it’d probably be a Miata.

It’s memphis international and about an hour from me, really my only choice until i get a tow rig...which is my next goal. Not much of a high speed course, although you can hit 150 on the straight(also serves as the drag strip 1/4 miles when it’s open)

oh nice sounds fun we hit up autoclub speedway at fontana aka the roval but they are ripping it out next year to build a new nascar short track booo

Shouldn’t have any problems running a cam. Stage 2 Cammotion should work great. If not going with bigger Supercharger I would have the stock unit ported, 103 throttle body, and rotofab intake. Don’t add a pulley as that is what the issue with heat comes from. I would do headers for sure, 2”.

Should make about 720whp with all that.


Just my opinion. You will hear a lot of guys up grading to the Mag 2650. If I had the money so would I.

I was looking at GPI, as I’m about 2hrs from them, but if I’m doing the install i will check out that brand also, thanks.

I think the CSP headers are in the lead, due to being made by stainless works and i already have a stainless works catback, and they are supposed to fit up really well.

If we do the install, that leaves me some wiggle room money wise, but likely not whipple or 2650 wiggle room lol
