According to others in this post it's because it's a designed fail point to avoid damage to the frame, but $3000 to fix is not cheap either.... but it's better than an actual structural frame damage that would total the car lol. And if you are reading this please check your own strut towers, I've seen people not knowing their strut tower is cracked until they read someone else's post... and the car drives perfect with a cracked strut tower, you won't notice anything driving around, even on roadcourse like I did...

If you're wonder why GM doesn't just make a stronger shock tower, keep in the back of your mind that the entire front end of our cars are carefully designed to collapse in a way that the crushing absorbs most of the energy from a crash, to reduce the impact energy that would normally result in injury's to you.

A stronger shock tower could result in less energy absorbed and more energy transmitted to the cabin structure.

So I got my car back they replaced strut tower on drivers side. Shop said its a bitch to get out. Replaced strut and other front end parts wheel alignment, they detailed whole car had a Paintless dent removal guy removed every ding. Detailed whole car replace trans and rear fluids with AC delco oem. Car looks great and drives great. Insurance covered it all but dent removal and fluid change, but well worth it. So now we know these strut towers can be replaced.

First, the aluminium strut tower "cap" is directly from the Alpha architecture. The ATS and CTS use the same bits. It's partly why the Camaro is so awesome and also expensive. Look at any other car and this piece is simply stamped steel.

Look under the hood of the new CT5 and you will see the same piece.

Second, GM has a series of pot hole events in their general durability test. The worst of them pretty much requires a helmet. So it's pretty evident that cracking this tower cap would require an accident and not expected use.

GM does not test for the "average" driver. No company that I know of does. They test for the extreme driver. But they also don't test for the singular worst possible driver. You probably couldn't afford that car let alone want it. So testing and designing for worst possible pot hole would make no sense.

Honestly, steel is a better material than aluminum where fatigue is of much concern like I would think is the case here. Steel has an endurance limit stress (a stress level below which the number of cycles reaching it might as well be "infinite"). Aluminum does not.

The aircraft industry would say aluminum is just fine. An aircraft fuselage undergoes an incredible amount of cycles of pressurization/depressurization throughout their lifespan and hold up extremely well for the pressures they experience. Just like any application, it requires inspection an maintenance to keep everything in working order. Aluminums advantages, far out weigh their costs/downfalls.

If they total it and pay it off I personally would buy it back, drill a stop hole at end of crack and tig weld it up. Provable add a small bracing piece and tig that on it too, then drive it.

I just went through this on my C7 Z06 with a hit & run collision at a car show. Damage was a slight crease in the lower rear bumper cover. The GM oem cover was $700, body shops estimated $1100 and $1500. With my deductible, insurance paid out $600 so I ended up replacing the cover myself. I didn't 'fix' the damage, I replaced the cover with an oem cover so it was as new.

But the Carfax report said the damage was to left rear fender and rear bumper fascia, which it was not. I've tried to get Carfax to correct the report to no avail. The insurance company of the hit & run driver won't even respond to a diminished value discussion.

If your state is a diminished value state pay a lawyer to write a letter or small claims. Usually around 25% of claim.
