ZL1 1LE DSSV Clunking

Hi All,

Curious, how many people have had their shocks replaced under warranty or have had issues with their DSSV dampers? Seems like front cluncking can either be caused by a loose swaybar endlink nut or the DSSV damper failing (internal assembly moving around)

loose swaybar endlink nuts have been an issue on these cars. I believe there is a TSB for it. Some install a nord lock washer.

It is not the sway bar, I had my RF DSSV replaced under warranty as well for the clunking. The issue is the damper inside the strut housing. It is held tight by a large nut on the bottom of the strut. This nut came loose allowing the damper to move/rattle inside the strut housing. While it was easily tightened, I had mine replaced due to concerns of internal damage.

Got this bad on my 18. Right front. Like someone is under the car hammering.

Had one replaced in March, second one this week, so front set is basically new.

You can replicate the clunk by good, strong shake /push/pulling on top of the tire w car on the ground, prob easier w no load.

Either way, GM has test procedure the tech follows w clunk mic n whatnot to make sure it's "that" part.

You dont notice clunk at first, but once its gone, its like WOW, it was loud. Just testament to how loud the car is overall and fact i like having windows down.. often.

What driving conditions tend to induce the clunk? Turning? Going over small bumps/large bumps?

I have noticed a pretty good one-time pounding sound if I hit certain crappy areas like potholes in our lovely Colorado highways, but the car is pretty stiff and I assumed it was just bottoming out.

Gonna check on this. Easy enough to push and pull on the tire to make sure my shit isn’t rattling.

Slow speed, like driving over edge of driveway, ramped area into parking lot, uneven pavement. In "normal" sound management mode its prob easier to hear it.

When it start going, good shake can replicate the noise. Damping still works, feel like top seal / bearing failure on the shock body. I didn't get chance to inspect other one, i'll ask again to check out bad part - if I remember to ask them to save it. They did say NO to me keeping the bad part.. maybe second one i can keep ?

Having to have my RF strut replaced.

I was with the mechanic at the dealer when he was changing my oil..he let the car down with the lift and as the right front hit the ground the whole tire wobbled really oddly. The mechanic saw this as well and was like whoa.

On the ride home I started hearing some banging noises etc..up front.

Anyways a new damper is on order.

Does any one know if the car needs an alignment after replacement? just curious.

Thanks,

Mine was starting to sound like someone was plucking a spring on mine on the RF, so my mech at the dealership has decided to replace both, so why wait for the other one to go, it took a month to get both of them in and the car has been sitting at the dealership since the 21st of Aug but with the hurricane that rolled through, it's safe and sound.

Mine had a bolt come loose and fall off in the unit itself. They replaced the entire thing.

Mine got done today, new struts and the alignment, I get to pick her up in the morning, from what I was told, the front passenger side strut bearing plate had shifted so I was hoping to look at it but they already boxed it up, but either way I have new struts.
