The ZL1 moniker comes from a legend. The link goes to a brief but accurate description. The ZL1 moniker has only been used on the most powerful production Camaros, even to this day.

Correct in that they were dealer order COPO's, GM had to make 50 of them in order to qualify in the NHRA class they ran as a production car, GM made 69 of them. So technically they were a production car. But yeah, special order.

The whole car was ridiculous, in a good way, IMHO. The real trouble with GM doing it this way is that there really is no "place" in the line up for the badge to return, and that is a shame.

I knew the early ones were straight 6's, just forgot to mention it. In fact, when I was 16, I almost bought one with the intention of doing a swap. My older brother talked me out of it. (He had enough projects w/o playing professor to his little brother)

A Vintage ZL1 is rare so will bring more money but the SS have always been a legend in the performance field since the early 60s after the SS went from just a trim level to strictly performance in around 66'.
