Nav SD Card - GM cost cutting
So I was messing around with trying to get all my music onto an SD card and then installing it in the card slot in the console. I couldn't work out why I was having so much trouble inserting the card. Got in there with a light, and to my surprise I found a card already in there! I removed it, and found that the maps for the Nav system were kept on there.
I was hoping that this was just left in there at the factory for a source to upload to the Nav system. But as it turns out, if you remove the card the Nav does not work! So now I have to make a decision - Nav or music. I can't believe GM did this. Should have provided a 2nd slot somewhere. Bad design in my opinion - more cost cutting I guess. I guess I could use a USB drive, but capacity for USB is limited to 16GB, where the SD will support 32GB - frustrating. Did anyone else realize this was the situation? Before I comment on the posted issue: Has the card slot been moved from under the dash in the pre-'19 cars to the console in the '19+ cars?
With my '17, the SD card is only to support the video system. My NAV works regardless of whether or not there is a card in the SD card slot. |

I don't know where you learned that a USB drive is only 16 gig. I have a 128 gig USB in my Camaro.

I have a 2019ZL1 and I don't have a SD slot in the console just for PDR under the dash next to hood opener My USB is in console which will use any gig

I will never get a useless navigation system in a car again. You can use Google maps, for free, and it is constantly updated or spend $50 or so and get a Garmin with free lifetime map updates.
By the way.... why don't you use your phone for music? Make a playlist and let it play. |

2 SD card slots. One under the dash for the PDR. One in the console - apparently for the Nav files. As far as connecting my phone for audio, I am in a unique position I guess. My phone is used for work and has a ton of security crap in it. It will not allow me to load a SD card for the risk of me transferring sensitive information. |

There are software that can format a USB stick/SD card above 32GB to FAT32 format. I have a software called Minitool Partition Wizard that did it to the 64GB SD card I have for the PDR. Plenty of other options exist. Other than the signal issues mentioned before, the HUD integration is another plus for the factory system. No need to take your eyes off the road. Can't do it with Google Maps, and it's nice that I don't have to connect my phone every time I drive with the wire getting in the way(especially with a stick shift).

There is a thread on here somewhere which has the part # for a USB/SD module that will fit our cars. It replaces the dual USB module in the console. I will see if I can find it. I bought it for my 2016, but haven't even thought about getting one for my 19 yet. Its like $25.
