going with the ZL1 6MT. Really fell in love with the HUD and REV match! Kids will just have to suck it up in the backseat...we have an SUV for most family trips.
I want the non-1LE though...all due to the tires. Hard to find a 3 season street tire in that size. Don't really have any plans to track the car...maybe an autoX day at the ATL Speedway. I wish Chevy did a track day experience like dodge does with SRTs. Thanks for the comments! |

Here is a link to my buddy and I running at the track he is in a stock GT350 and is a damn good driver and I in my stock ZL1 1LE, the low end torque of the ZL1 is hard to be on a road course

your choices are very limited, the Goodyears are the cheapest but apparently being closed out

I run Michelin Pilot Sport AS3+ on my ZLE on the street.
285 up front sucks a little-lose a little front end bite. 325 in the back. They have great wet-weather traction, are true all season tires, and do a great job of keeping 650hp tame (enough) in nice weather as well. You aren't going to win many races (that's why you keep other tires for racing-where that sort of thing belongs,) but you're not going to come across a ton of cars that compete with the ZLE on the street most of the time anyway. When these wear out, I may go for some Bridgestone tires for the street, since I get a 50% employee discount.. -Jeremy |

4S are best all around tires you can buy! Only get AS3 if you drive in snow.
If you live in primarily dry climates, The GYSC3’s are also a great tire for the dry. Best Regards, Dave

Hi Joe,
The first thing you should do is to test drive both cars. When I was looking to replace my 5th gen Camaro ZL1, and have tested a C7 Stingray Z51, I went and tested a red wine Shelby GT350, the first thing that I noticed was that without the stripes it looked like a regular Mustang GT, most people would not be able to distinguish it. The interior with the Recaros and the toggle switches looks nice. The exhaust noise and revving up the car at 8000 rpms is addictive. But for some strange reason I noticed that off the line there was no power below 4000 rpm, where you do most of your city driving, it was lifeless. Both my Camaro ZL1 and the Stingray C7 felt more powerful across the RPMs. I left the dealership disappointed because I wasn't expecting that from the widely published Shelby as the best Muscle car by most auto magazines, and it was overpriced $5-10K above MSRP for me it wasn't worth it. Instead I went and bought the Stingray C7 Z51. I believe that the best choice would be the 6th gen Camaro ZL1, it even outperforms the Shelby GT350R at the track and would give a strong fight to the Shelby GT500 at a better price, and best of all it has a MT option.

Sorry for my comment Joe, and I love my wife. But after driving for joy on a '05 Infiniti G35 coupe, Porsche 911 and a '11 Mustang GT 5.0 all of them MT, driving them spirited or at the track, there was nothing better to me. Then my wife began bitching that my next car should be automatic because she hated shifting (she knew how to drive MT but didn't want to). I did what you mentioned, and bought my 5th gen Camaro ZL1 AT, thinking that probably the SC engine was going to help me forget the MT shifting because it was stronger and paddle shifted as needed, then came the time of switching cars, because I always wanted a Corvette, again she convinced me to buy a Stingray C7 Z51 in automatic. In reality I had very nice cars, but they felt very boring to drive them with an AT, I really missed shifting my MT previous sport cars. After my C7 gave me many reliability issues, I went and replaced it by a 6th gen Camaro SS with a MT. Did I ask for her opinion? "Hell NO". And now I'm a very happy driver again. No regrets!.

I was going to add my 16 GT350 trade assisted into a 17 GT350 story, but most others covered the common issues well here. Cliff notes my 16 was in the shop for about 4 out of the first 6 months I had it including an engine replacement/plus a host of other issues. The replacement was for oil usage which was roughly a quart every 100 miles or so at the end. Ford was a pain in the ass to deal with on the warranty aspect, but ultimately covered it. Chevy has their fit and finish/quality issues here and there, but is far better than my GT350s were. My detailer thought my 17 had been in an accident and repaired very badly by the dealer before delivery because the overspray and panel fit was so bad. No accident some of them are that bad. I should of never taken delivery of it, but after months of dealing with Ford I wanted to move on. My 17 was going to need an engine replacement for oil usage at/around 8k miles (after 2 drivers side half shaft replacements) so I had enough and ditched it. I have 8k on my ZLE with one track day and a lot of spirited driving. I've used roughly 1/2 a quart in that time. Some software bugs, but no reliability or bad fit and finish issues aside from some cheap feeling parts/it is a Chevy so what do you expect. Ford also has very cheap feeling switches etc in the interior as well.
As for driving comparisons, the GT350 is a lot of fun to drive, but tramlines a lot worse and understeers much more than my ZLE. I don't understand the rave reviews for the GT350 shifter either. It was very notchy and I prefer the ZLEs much better. It's not perfect, but a lot better IMO. The rev match on the ZL1s is awesome when I'm feeling lazy/commuting to work etc. The GT350 is the slowest feeling 500 plus HP car I've ever driven. The sound is awesome and the 8250 RPM redline is cool, but a lot harder to use on the street. I didn't think it was gutless under 4k, but you definitely had to rev past 5k to get some real speed out of the Voodoo. The LT4 makes power everywhere and 6th gear is actually usable in it. 6th is so tall in the GT350 you have a hard time accelerating under 60-65 without downshifting into 5th. I liked the Recaros in the GT350 better, but the creature comforts in the ZL1s are much nicer and I do like these Recaros a lot as well. Visibility wasn't great in the GT350 either so I'm not sure why the fan boys always bag on ZL1/Camaro for it. It is a little worse, but the ZL1s have blind spot monitoring, which wasn't an option on the 16/17 GT350s so it was harder for me to change lanes in that car, especially to the left of course. Both are fastbacks and both visibility is compromised negatively in each car. I know you already made your decision, but hopefully this helps reinforce it one way or another. |
