Valve Stem and TPMS
I had to have a tire and wheel replaced due to a run in with a curb (those wheels are really expensive).
The dealer said that he had to replace the TPMS sensor because GM doesn't sell the valve stem separately from the sensor. Does this sound right? Sounds kind of weird to me. He gave me back the old sensor and said if they ever sell separately, there is nothing wrong with the sensor that I have. I could take a picture of what he gave me back if it would help. BTW, is there a battery in this sensor? I would imagine then when you change tires you should replace the sensor at the same time. Thanks, Mark |

There is a coin cell battery inside the sensor. It provides a pretty long life and if they die before your warranty, GM just replaces the sensor because the sensors are so cheap. I would figure they'd add a piezoelectric harvester to the design with a capacitor and they would run forever -- since driving would cause enough vibration to keep the capacitor charged.
As for the valve stems, they are available without the sensor. There are two types, a black rubber molded stem and a polished metal stem. The black rubber type have the obvious coin cell area in their housing and the metal have a boxier design that is sealed. OEM stem/sensor (black rubber) is ACDelco 13581558 OEM stem (black rubber) is ACDelco 15263240 OEM stem (metal) is ACDelco 20964159OEM stem/sensor (metal) is ACDelco 15114379 (I may have the metal part numbers backwards) Black rubber stem style ![]() Metal stem style

I guess based on the post above mine, is there way to tell whether you have the plastic or the rubber based TPMS without taking off the tire?

Thanks, mine is metal on the outside, so presumably metal on the inside?

This is complete Bull$4it. I just had the same problem with a dealer who insisted that the sensors “Break” when you try to replace wheels on a 6th Gen Camaro RS/SS. Wrong!
I needed 4 new wheels replaced due to pot-holes near me. Luckily I had the GM Wheel+Tire protection package, so all 4 wheels were replaced at no cost to me. Or so I thought... After dropping off my car, service advisor insisted that he needed to charge me $400 for new sensors. “They break when taking them off”, he said. He even brought the parts manager to try to convince me that this was true. After some back-and-forth, they then claimed that GM didn’t have part numbers for the Valve-Stem only, and that new Valve-Stems were only available with the sensor already attached. That’s when I showed them the GM schematic for the wheel assembly, and provided them with the Valve-Stem part number for Gen 6th Camaro RS/SS. They quickly changed their tune, and agreed to only charge me for new Valve-Stems ($70!!!!). Yeah, that’s a lot for Valve-Stems, but I needed the car back that day, so I agreed. Anyhow there is the new part number for the stems alone, hope this helps someone down the road. Part# 13598909 https://www.gmpartsdirect.com/oem-pa...-stem-13598909 PS- The TPMS on the dash reads the correct PSI after reusing the old sensors with the new Valve-Stems. |
