Lets talk - Underhood temps - ZL1 & Autocross

So, my Zl1 1LE is on it's way and one thing that has been on the back of my mind is underhood temps.

My background - Coming from a 2015 Z/28 that I autocrossed a decent amount. Underhood temps can climb in between runs especially with some events that don't have pit lanes to park. My temps were under control in that car and I did some things to help.

With my ZL1 on the way, I plan on doing more autocross as well as more road trips. I want to keep the underhood temps down without doing anything to void my warranty (tune).

One idea I am thinking is to have the factory manifolds cerakoted. Possibly the heat shields as well.

Anyone have experience with Cerakote to reduce underhood temps?

Other ideas are the larger coolant tank for the supercharger (but curious if that's just hauling around more hot coolant?)

Possible behind the bumper mounted cooler?

Call me crazy, but another thing I am thinking of doing is removing the windshield squirters and routing the hose with a different squirter to spray directly onto the front of the radiator.

Thoughts ?

The aftermarket SC tanks are more for the convenience of removing air from the SC, without the need for a special tool or a trip to the dealership. So yes, you would be carrying around more hot coolant.
You will find, unless you are going to do some mods, the cooling system in this car is more than adequate to handle anything you are going to throw at it.

You haven't driven a C6 ZL1 but you're saying you aren't going to mod the car in a way that would void the warranty and you're concerned about underhood temps, primarily for road trips and autocross?

If you aren't tuning, adding a pulley etc, you definitely don't need to do anything to protect for temps. Do some research about this car or drive it for awhile first, the OEM cooling is probably the best cooling ever designed for an American car. If you add additional 3rd party coolers, you introduce new potential points of failure. I track my ZLE on 95 degree days repeated WOT in the California desert and have no engine heat issues at all, not coolant, oil, nothing. Coolant stays pegged in the same place always, and oil temps come down fast after even idling. If you mess with the cooling lines/system and your motor fails due to something unrelated, GM will not cover your motor no matter what the Magnuson Morrison act says, their lawyers are sitting around waiting for this.

Brakes get hot, use Castrol SRF or Brembo HT64 and get some SS brake lines.

I've driven several. In an autocross situation and a supercharged car, a heatsoak condition is a real possibility and I want to do all I can to make sure it's at it's best for every run, that's all.

For autox fluids are probably fine but the exhaust is hot and you have to park the car right after a run, I just open the hood to prevent heat soak as much as possible between runs. Opening the hood is like opening an oven door after a run.

I plan on popping the hood any chance I get as I typically do anyway. Anything to get the heat out. The sitting or idling in line is the concern.

I agree with others here, pop the hood and/or run the AC to get the fans going between runs and you;ll be fine. In Autocross I wouldn't worry about power loss from heat soak with a ZL1, the slight power loss you have have is more than offset by the massive over-availability of HP and low-end TQ from the ZL1. If you're getting an A10, just leave it in Auto.

Throw on some quick heating A7s or PSC2s in 315-f, 345-r, and you'll spend most of your time trying to control this beast and not put down too much power, heat soak or not.

Heat soak is only a problem for tuned, pullied ZL1s on the dragstrip worried about tenths of a second over an 10-11 second run.

100 octane and max camber will help too, like -3.5 f +

As a someone who autocrosses very heavily, and I came from a 2014 Z/28 and now drive a ZLE, and all this was while i was living in Phoenix. The cooling is on point and I have no issues keeping temps down. Even on the road course this car doesn't run very hot.

I ran HPR road course on a 90 degree day and my coolant temp stayed almost flat at around 205. I didn’t see any major fluctuations at all. I was paying particular attention to see how it did and was impressed.

The car has amazing cooling in its factory configuration...you will be hard pressed to improve it. The 5th gen ZL1 was lacking in the cooling department so GM took care of it for the 6th gen. Good luck with your new machine...you will love it!

I have autocrosssed my ZL1 since new in 2017. No heat soak issues. Never even bothered to open the hood on about 1 Mile airfields. Of course, I am in the Northeast. 90ish degrees is about as hot as it gets. As other's said, good cooling.
