Edit: my 2020 Ram has the ebrake and in the settings you can have it auto on/off...not sure how you would do that in a manual

This is me at every car wash when they show "vehicle in Park" on the screen, LOL.

I think it could be set in a manual so that if the vehicle is shut off while it's not moving, parking brake is engaged.

I have gotten used to it and give the car a little extra gas before releasing the clutch after being parked so that the automatic release isn't too noticeable but still would have preferred the older style parking brake that you pull up manually.

The switch can be accidentally pulled partially up so you think the parking brake is going to engage when it isn't...bad design. I aways try to double check the dash for the PARK light and leave it parked in gear as backup unless I'm parking in my flat garage.

According to the owner's manual you can use it as a backup if the brakes fail. Just keep holding the toggle switch up until the car stops.

Page 233 in the 2017 owner's manual:

"If the EPB is applied while the vehicle is moving, the vehicle will decelerate as long as the switch is held up. If the switch is held up until the vehicle comes to a stop, the EPB will remain applied."

You are aware that you are supposed to set the brake and then put the transmission in park. You rest the car on your parking brake not the transmission. Learned that 50 years ago.

Correction,

Car running
On Foot break
P-brake (e-brake now)
Off Foot brake
Put car in P
Turn off car

And I have no Park, so now what.

I kid, I kid.

Electronic parking brakes are there for safety. They also help reduce stress on your tranny from people who bump park.

Embrace the parking brake...and wear your mask too.

"Bump parking" is essentially hit and run and will be treated as such when I pull the footage from the dash cam.

You betcha.
There was a story I read a long time ago about a guy who was tired of replacing or re-chroming his bumpers (anyone remember chrome bumpers? ) because people kept bumping into them in parking lots.
So he welded a couple of tubular sockets into gaps in the bumpers and would insert thick wooden dowels into them that extended about 6" when parking.
He claimed to have replaced a lot of dowels, but no more bumpers.
FWIW...

To the OP-
Yes I disliked the electronic parking brake initially too, but have become accustomed to it.
I strongly prefer a plain old-fashioned lever hand brake.
But then again my days of pulling high speed hand brake j-turns are long passed.
So it's really not the big deal I had thought it might be.

I cannot believe that the electronic version is any sort of cost savings or safety enhancement as has been mentioned.
My suspicion is that it is simply another "golly gee-whiz Batman" feature and service revenue enhancement.

SS 6MT

I'd prefer a manual parking brake to use with the 6MT. Seems like the hill holder only works a a steep incline. I've had people pull up really close to my rear bumper at a stop light with a hill not steep enough for the hill holder to engage which calls for excellent gas and clutch technique. I've only had the car 3 weeks so still getting my skills worked on. Also agree with the dead battery and emergency back up comments.

It engages in my driveway... and that is only a gradual slope (to give you an idea... driveway is about 110 feet long and it rises around 4-5' over that length). It does not require a steeper incline, and using a parking brake to start out without rolling back is cheating.

I suppose the e-Pbrake might not release if the driver had not yet fastened his seat belt and tried to drive off. I know our Subaru Legacy's pushbutton P-brake was like that, and absolutely would not let you "drive through it".

Sorry, but unless you're talking about strength-challenged individuals I'm not seeing that at all. And I've had a car with such a parking brake system.

Uhm... Maybe just so people don't go drifting with a mechanical handbrake?

I have a manual and I don't like the e-brake because you cannot look in the window to double check if you set it.

As for the post about hill-assist, you may have to press the brake harder to have the computer hold it for you.
