Maybe it was on a dyno...

Nonetheless, unique situation for two aerodynamically identical cars, but major differences in power with gearing that either is optimum or not for topspeed:

ZL1 650 HP manual - topspeed 5th gear / 175 mph (~redline limited)
SS 1LE 455 HP manual - topspeed 5th gear / 175 mph (~6100 rpm/drag limited)

In any case - incredible we can buy a Chevy that hits these numbers stock.

there is also a gearing difference between the zl1 and zl1 1le manual.

It may be just 6th gear, I'm not sure and haven't researched it much, but I do know cruising at 70 in a zle has significantly higher rpm than a regular zl1

also

the rear end gearing is as follows
zl1 (and zle) manual - 3.73
zl1 auto coupe - 2.85
zl1 auto convertible 2.77

crosive: Yes there are gearing differences between manual ZL1 and ZLE as stated several times in this thread. My post was discussing a non-ZLE car.

ZLE manual is 191 mph (Chevy rating)
ZL1 auto is 198 (Chevy rating)

Yes, the 6th gear ratio in the ZL1/1LE is shorter than in the base ZL1.

Here are the transmission ratios read from a base ZL1 tune file:
1=2.289
2=1.611
3=1.208
4=1.000
5=0.818
6=0.536

And the different 6th gear ratio in the ZL1/1LE=0.675

Then consider that the ZL1/1LE also has the shorter 19" tires, and it's easy to see why it's running more rpm cruising at 70 than the base ZL1.

Yes, and in stock form too. Doubly incredible give that these cars are so inexpensive (relatively speaking).

186MPH last month in my A10 2018 ZL1 and that seemed to be where the limiter was at since it didn't move after staying in it another 2-3 seconds.

I have looked at some ZL1 tune files, and have found the limiter was set at 206 in them.

I can confirm that the ZLE pulls just fine in 6th gear. I've been North of 180 twice but always tend to run out of road rather quickly. The car certainly has good manners at high speed though, which is what I love about it.

That makes sense but damn if it took going to the oval to hit 203mph imo that 206 number in bone stock form is not possible to actually hit. But once you add some power to it and guarantee there is zero belt slip occurring and sufficient airflow to cut down on heat soak it could easily blow past 206+
https://media.chevrolet.com/media/us...amaro-zl1.html.

I'll tell you what though, it felt like a wall had been hit at 186 and thanks to your insight just means I'd of been there all damn day climbing 1mph at a time and most likely would have burned up a trans, ran out of gas, or ran out of tire if given unlimited amount of space to try and make the attempt.

Were you going into a headwind by any chance? Wind sure does make a difference, note the 194/202 runs when reversing direction in the test that was mentioned. Plus as you get near the limit, the acceleration becomes pretty slow, nearing the balance point of drag and power.

Calculated my run with a little downhill towards the end. The car was maxing out at 196 but the downhill helped get up to 207.
As someone whos owning a muscle car for the first time, i legit cried tears of joy as i pulled over.
