I've never seen that in the US. As long as its dexos, it's OK. Castrol is a good oil and OEM for BMW. I use that in my M3. It's pricey though at $60- $12/L. I got 6 quarts of Mobil 1 0w/40 ESP on amazon for $47.94 - 7.99/Qt. I'm sending a UOA to Blackstone after this change and seeing the difference. If the 5w/30 vs 0w/40 demonstrates similar results, I may switch to 5w/30.

This stuff is deoxs1, apparently the 0W-40 is not - do I think it matters? No

0W-40 $21/5 quarts - great price

Amazon even has their own rebranded dexos full synthetic oil now!

In EU, (France) the 5w30 and 0w40 are both dexos 2
You can see it on the picture above.
I don’t know why your black 0w40 On your link is not dexos

I recommend everyone just use this, and call it a day. 5w40 > 0w40 IMO, and much cheaper.

Valvoline 5w40 MST Dexos 2. $75 shipped for 10 QTs from Walmart.

They probably haven't gone through the certification testing, but it meets many other European long drain certifications so I'm not worried (typically change out at 4k miles anyway)

I don't like overpaying for labels, especially when I know a product is not protecting my engine any better and may even be worse. Standard M1 is a mediocre synthetic from all the comparative tests I've seen. Most people don't research this stuff they're just brand/label/manufacturer huggers

Viscosity is at the upper end of what I would run on the street, especially in the winter (cold start-up)

0W-40 is very close to 5W-30 low temp viscosity, and better protection warmed up

I ran that MST 5W-40 for almost 45k miles daily driver They changed the formulation though and it's not the same unless you find some old stock. That Walmart link pictures the old one. Napa has it for $5.XX a quart right now.

Costco has their own oil 5W-30 Dexos 1 for $2.49 a quart. I think they sell it in a box of 2 5qt jugs.

Yeah, North America gets a different label from Europe. No idea why. I wonder if they are the same thing and just not certified, as mentioned before.

Technically, for a cold start, 0W-40 will be better than 5W-40 since it's thinner and it will start flowing sooner on a cold start.

Either way, I don't see anything that's a lot cheaper than the Mobil1 ESP in Canada that's DEXOS2 and in XW-40 range.

Now if you skip the DEXOS2 part, the options open up a lot and you can get a lot of cheaper oils.

I get it that 0wXX has better cold flow than 5wXX, but I dont agree that there is any real benefit to the difference between a 0w and a 5w unless you're running your car in cold or very cold temps. In cold states I agree, 0w is always best Fall-Winter.

I'd argue that in warmer places like CA where I live, 0w40 may be too thin year round and the 5w40 holds up better overall to higher engine/oil temps and high RPM in terms of viscosity.

^ That is why it makes no sense that a 5W-40 Dexos isn't suitable for track or street or both according to GM. 0W has nothing to do with track useage as I understand oil weights. It even frickin says you can run a 15W-50 at the track (no Dexos cert!)!

0W-40 is not too thin, used oil viscosity should be in the 7.5-9.5 Cst range

"Holds up better" - sure the viscosity will be higher at the conclusion of the service life, but that in itself is not the true measure of performance. By that logic, just run a straight 50W and everything is wonderful

On the track you don't care as much about cold starts or flow characteristics, the oil is subjected to high load and heat all the time and breaks down faster

By the way this is another reason to run a catch can - oil dilution (fuel) degrades oil viscosity quickly

I would consider a catch can, but there has already been at least one ZL1 owner who had his warranty denied by GM on a failed motor due to a catch can, so that's a deal breaker for me. I have no mods. The problem with straight 50 is there is no low weight oil blended in for cold start, so you're starting with pure 50 wt and that's pretty thick even at 80 F--when I add 15w50 in my engine on a warm day it flows slowly from the container.
