Ignorant Engine question
I was just reading a thread over on the 6th General discussion area about an LT1 that grenaded.
Saw where folks were mentioning that the AFM lifters have been known to be an issue. So, I was wondering, do our LT-4 engines have these AFM lifters? If so, I may swap them out once my warranty is up in 11months. Be a good time for a cam swap at the same time... ;-)

So you read one post and you’re ready to consider all of them will do that?
Don’t believe it, it’s not a trend, except for the purists, the AFMsystem works fine. |

I have a manual trans. So, I don't have AFM regardless.
So, if I am going to do a cam once my warranty is up, why not replace the lifters as well if they have caused problems for others? Have you not heard the old adage about an ounce of prevention?

If you are doing a new cam you should do new lifters regardless IMHO.

Yeah, was planning to anyway.
Still kind of curious as to whether or not the LT-4 has the AFM lifters. Hopefully, someone here will know Like the EDFHobbies Dude. He has done a ton of motor work on his.

The LT4 comes with AFM. It's only deleted on the manual optioned cars.
Here's GM's cam spec sheet: LT4 Camshafts LT4 Cam Specs Part Number 12642245 Duration @ .050 in. (int./exh.) 189°/223° Valve Lift (int./exh.) 0.492 in./0.551 in. Lobe Separation Angle 120° Cam Gear Attachment 1-Bolt Cam Gear Poles 4X Active Fuel Management (AFM) Yes** Variable Valve Timing (VVT) Yes NOTE: **All versions used AFM with one exception — the Chevy Camaro ZL1 with manual transmission. |

Yeah we don’t have AFM in our LT4 6 speeds and am thankful.

I'm confused. In other threads, some have said indicated that no ZL1s have AFM. I've never noticed it kicking on and off in my A10, so I assumed this was true. I also believe I've read that the parts are there, it's just that system is not activated. I've never cracked one open, so not sure about any of this, but would love to know for sure. Also wondering if having the VLOM is in place requires the use of AFM lifters on those 4 cylinders?

The extra labor step for removing the AFM lifters is pulling the cylinder heads to access.
Even if your car is not equipped with an active AFM, the hard parts are still present likely to keep simplicity on the assembly line/etc, unfortunately.

My wife has a ‘17 SS with AFM. So far I’ve been unable to find the little green “V4” that she has on her DIS on mine. I’ve concluded that I don’t have it.
