No Run Flat tires on my ZL1, tips?

Greetings gentlemen,

Two years ago, in my enthusiasm to acquire my ‘18 ZL1, I incorrectly assumed that it also had run-flat tires like the ‘17 SS I previously owned. Apparently, my only recourse to fix a flat tire aside from outside help is the compressor and can of sealant in the trunk. Assuming the bead hasn’t separated from the wheel and the hole isn’t catastrophic, I guess the sealant method is a reasonable first start, I’m going to buy a second can of it next week.

Any tips or suggestions for self-help while transiting rural areas would be appreciated. Is it true that a donut wouldn’t work for the rear as the invariable diameter difference would damage the eLSD?

I welcome your responses,
Chris

Can’t speak for the eLSD question (but it’s a good one). But I would personally avoid using sealant if at all possible. It makes a horrible mess, and if not thoroughly cleaned, and any left in/on rim, it will cause balance issues as the sealant perpetually migrates. I would also bet it destroys TPMS sensor as well.

I have a long trip flat tire bag with sealant, compressor, plugs, pliers, plug tool, gloves, towel, screw driver and hammer. Has helped me in the past in 100 degree weather. I switch that bag between cars depending on the trip and car to be used.

Pay the extra $5/yr for tow insurance.

Great points, especially where balance is concerned. I have heard that the sealant that comes with the car is the exception to destroying TPMS sensors though the mess and balance issues would still need to be addressed. Not sure if this is true.

I agree with everyone above with their replies. Get AAA or OnStar for your piece of mind when out in the boonies.

I purchased a spare from modern spare. While not cheap, the spare and equipment they provide is high quality. Look them up. Not having to deal with the hassle of a tow, is worth the cost to me and gives you options when in a bind.

Cheers! E

I could care less about a TPMS being messed up as long as I can get back on the road safely and fast. I’ll buy the whatever’s later.

Ok. So your car gets towed 159 miles from home. Now what? Where do you go?

I'd rather get fixed myself and get back home. Depending on where I am I really don't want to wait on help if I can do it myself.

I bought this:

and this

For longer trips I pack a spare (modern spare). My last two flats occurred after hitting debris in the road, which trashed the tires. Both times I was in the middle of nowhere, hundreds of miles from home. Without a spare I would have had to wait for a tow, and then hope someone in the area had the right tire.

To the closest place that repairs or sells tires.

What are the odds of some super wide ass tires like ours being in stock? I’m just saying. I don’t care. I do me. You guys do you. We still love each other.
