I love and respect Z28.

The 6th Gen ZL1 is superior in everyway IMO.

I had a 15' Z/28 with Vengenance Racing stg 5, almost 700hp. The ZL/1 is faster and handles better, with all the options it just doesn't get any better.

In what way? Absolutely not mixed up.
Stock power goes to ZL1, but I'll take the Z/28 all day over the ZL1 even with less power. Its why I'm either ditching mine and going back to a Z/28 when the right one comes along (I have my eye on 2 different ones, but given the current situation, not much I can do about it, because I damn sure ain't flying to pick one up right now lol), or just getting another Z/28 and parking the ZL1 in the driveway in case I get lazy and want to drive auto some days. I don't dislike the ZL1, I just prefer the Z/28...its the only car I've ever missed after it was gone (and I've had *many* cars lol).

For DD I would get the ZL1 (not the ZL1 1LE) - I have a Z/28 and love it for fun drives and track days, but prefer a better ride for a daily and the ZL1 offers a superior ride and nicer creature comforts and with 650 hp it hauls the mail.

If this wasn’t a daily, and more of a long term keeper, I would say Z28 all day long. Just an awesome and extremely rare car. Based on the fact that you are looking for a daily, I think the combo of creature comforts and power in the ZL1 will make you happier.

Thumbs up

Hi Maro-89,
As an owner of a previous 5th gen Camaro ZL1 and now an owner of a 6th. gen Camaro SS, maybe I can give you a word of advise.
There was a huge steep forward toward technology design and improved performance with the 6th gen Camaro:
-Introduction of the superb handling "Alpha" platform, wich was also used on the Cadillac ATS-V & CTS-V sport cars.
-Improved eLSD on the SS1LE & ZL1 models.
-Lighter weight

On 2016 MT's driver's car they commented by far, the lower SS1LE model broke all the speed, handling, braking, laps records of the previous 5th gen performance models (ZL1 & Z28 track prep Camaro that came with Trofeo track tires, high performance brakes and suspension), the 6th gen SS1LE was riding on just Summer street tires and using a streetable magnetic suspension to give you an idea. If the 6th gen SS1LE beated the mighty 5th gen Camaro Z28, the actual ZL1 demolishes that prior Z28 model.

Nurburgring lap times:
6th gen ZL1 1LE: 7:10.04
6th gen ZL1: 7:29.60
5th gen Z28: 7:37.4

Don't get me wrong I loved the looks of my 5th gen Camaro ZL1 muscle car. The Z28 would be great if you are looking for a Classical limited edition Camaro.
But if you are looking for improved performance it would not compare with the 6th gen ZL1 & SS1LE Camaro.

Information from MT's 2016 Best drivers car:

6th gen Camaro SS1LE:

0-60: 4 secs = to the 5th gen Z28

1/4 mile: 12.4. VS 5th gen Z28: 12.3 secs

60-0: 94 feet (new record). 5th gen Z28: 100 foot

Lat. Accel. : 1.09 (new record), 5th gen Z28: 1.08

Figure eight : 23.3 (new record). 5th gen Z28: 23.6

Laguna Seca Lap time: 1:37.77 (new record). 5th gen Z28: 1.38

Attached is the picture of my not forgoten 5th gen 2014 Camaro ZL1.

So is the feel and simplicity of the Z28 what you like?

A regular ZL1 would kill the Z28 in any speed comparison, so I’m just trying to figure out what you like more about it?

Wow everyone really appreciate the replies. Thank you for sharing! Seems like the ZL1 is the consensus here for most. Even though this post it's in the 6th gen ZL1 forums it seems like you guys still kept an open mind about both appreciate it.

For me, the Z/28 wins by far in looks, comfort (I found it WAY more comfortable than the ZL1), the feel of the drive, the handling, everything with the single exception of the ZL1 (non-ZLE) allows you to get over those big ass speed humps in the road without going at a steep angle and speed bumps (or really bumpy roads) aren't felt *quite* as much (honestly though, it really isn't much of a difference at all). All in all though, I wouldn't want to do a 1-2 hr drive in the ZL1, at all, but I loved those drives in the Z/28. I don't know how people find the ZL1 comfortable honestly, the seat can't even sit back far enough to get comfortable imo.

On the other front, one is a rare car you literally never see on the road, the other is a dime a dozen camaro by comparison. There were more ZL1s built even in the pilot year (2012) than were ever built of the Z/28, and tens of thousands of them since then in both 5th and 6th gen (6th gen ZL1 alone has 12646 from 2017-2019, compared to 1801 Z/28s in 2014-2015 combined).
If you care about the stock power, or want auto, or want fancy amenities you'll likely not use anyways, then the ZL1 is likely your best bet. If you like to feel like you're part of the road, the Z/28 (the 6th gen ZLE I'm sure will achieve that same feeling though if you can tolerate the looks of the stupid aero package on it), or of course, if you like the rarity factor, then its a no brainer on that front.

All in all though, its up to your tastes.

I will say though; I upgraded my Z/28 and completely regretted doing it. I added something like 120whp, but lost the "natural" feel of the car, the originality, and adds too much complexity imo. So, you can upgrade the shit out of it, yes, but tbh, you'll probably still fall short on the torque at the wheels vs the ZL1. The next one I buy will stay stock.
Hmm interesting post you mentioned you wouldn’t want to take the ZL1 for an 1-2 hour or more trip in it. I do recall at one point sitting in a 2012 5th gen ZL1 back to back with a 2017 ZL1 and found the 5th gen ZL1 to be more a little bit more comfortable to be honest but didn’t think the 6th gen Z was all that bad. Is it not really comfortable during long road trips?

If I could I would LOVE to get both! Unfortunately it’s either or lol but you having all three of those rides you must be living the American dream eh? Lol. How’s the drivability of your Z28 with those mods? I was eventually gunna mod it and start with a heads cam to ensure the LS7 heads are good and might as well through a cam in for more performance and shoot two birds with one stone. Bolt ons would be good to eventually add as well but I would start little by little to see how the car responds.

I see seems like the Z28 is harder to handle because it’s bigger and heavier or maybe just the way it is?

Even with 700 HP in the Z28 the ZL1 is still faster?
