ZL1 1LE track guide

Maybe these can become a sticky with track event info

ZL1 1LE track prep questions for you folks that track often. I’m pretty new to this so this will be just for the occasional track days. I’m a newbie so I’m not going out there trying to set any track records. Just looking to have some fun & keep the car on the track. Car is a 2018 ZL1 1LE. I’ve read through the track manual
Oil: 15W-50 or 0W-40 ESP? Are you changing the oil right before & after track events?

Alignment: track alignment settings for track days. Any reason to switch back to a street alignment while not on the track if the car is not a daily driver & just a weekend toy? I know the rear has TTY bolts that are suppose to be changed. Any reason to change the toe rods to something like BMR on the rear over the factory setup?

Hood water deflector: remove before track event.

Underbody air deflector tire dam kit: any real difference in removing these?

Tires: factory 3Rs. I know they need some heat cycles before they get any grip.

Brake fluid: will be switching over to dot4. Any particular brands better? Are stainless or carbon lines necessary?

Helmet: what are some good recommendations?

Track shoes: what are some good recommendations?

Anything else I’m missing?

Use the 0-40W ESP and just go by the oil life indicator. That's the beauty of the ESP stuff - made for street and track

Change tranny fluid after 15 hours of track time per the track prep guide

I do 10 to 12 events a year in the 1LE and do the following - not saying this is best, but it works for me.
1) I only use the track oil and change after every 2 to 3 events
2) I stick with the track alignment for road and track
3) I remove the water deflector before each event and then put it on afterwards
4) I don't mess with the underbody deflectors - I figure they put them there for a reason
5) I love the factory tires and brake pads
6) I use Castrol SRF - lasts the entire season
7) As long as the Helmet is DOT/Snell go for cheapest that is comfortable (I use open face when instructing, closed face when racing)
8) Go for comfort in the shoes, personally i like a wide sole as it helps with Heel/Toe
9) Remember to change the differential fluid as per manual
10) Don't make any performance modifications - the car has more than enough performance right off the dealership floor. Focus on learning and having fun!

I do change the oil for the track as I understood it'd be an easy warranty denial should an engine go boom on track.

True. Never hurts to just change it.

There’s a guy in the facebook group, works for GM in some capacity i believe, said that’s the first thing they’d check on a ZLE before proceeding to cover the new motor.

I went and got some Mobil1 15w50 the next day lol

The 2019 camaro track guide does say 15w50 for the ZLE, but what's weird is the 2019 corvette track guide says 0w40 esp for the LT4 Z06 wZ07 for street and track. The Z06wZ07 pulls just as many g's as the ZLE AND the ZLE will run much cooler. The LT5 ZR1 uses 15w50 because of the higher power and (probably) less air flow as the ZLE. Thinking maybe the camaro guide is being updated for 2020...

Thanks for some responses. I’m sure for how I will be driving the car on the track 0-40 would be fine, but I’ll run 15-50 just to be on the safe side.

From what it states in the manual, those deflectors are for increasing your gas mileage.

Whether or not with them being on or off can make that much of a difference on a race course, I don't believe anyone has tested or noticed.

Except how do they know you were on the track unless you say so.

I didn't really say that but the oil cap does say 0W40...

Is one dry sump and one wet? Just a question?
