I went ahead and ordered Apex SM-10 wheels in 18x10.5" +22 fitment to be able to try 315/30/18 RRs in square size. They should arrive tomorrow. Hopefully, I can test them on the next club event scheduled on April 11th ..hoping that state ban till April 8th will be lifted by then

It was a club event with about 8 participants but I really hope the next one isn't cancelled. I already sold my OEM wheels/tires as I won't need thrm much so currently have two sets 18" and 19". I will soon list the 18x10" front wheels for sale (as I received the 18x10.5" to be able to run 315s up front)I am about to do some test fitment. I have more aggressive grinding than the last one so combined with that and the less degree of camber (used to be -3.0 on the old csr and -2.7 now) , I think it should be ok. Worst case, I will use 8mm spacer instead of 5mm. Will keep you posted

On the other news. I received my new wheels (Apex SM-10 18x10.5" +22mm) to run 315/30/18 RRs. As I already had a spare set in 295/315-30-18, I decided to use the 315s out of that set and post the 18x10" wheels as well as the for 295 tires for sale.
I had them mounted and balanced at Chase Race and test fitted them after I came back home. Long story short, it's a tight fit but seems to be working . I am so glad that I let Doug to grind and weld the knuckles a bit further to gain some extra space. Combined with the -2.7 camber , it will work. For the reference, the chicken strips on the sidewall don't touch the knuckle and they're at least 5-6 mm long. I still keep my 3mm spacer and can combine with the existing 5mm spacer to make it 8mm (as I already have longer wheel studs) but it looks like it won't be necessary. I also changed the differential after the first track day. It didn't seem that bad but I also couldn't really drive at last event that long too. Also added the brake deflector and it looks huge compared to the OEM SS 1LE deflector. I am hoping that they also make a difference for cooling the rotors by looking at their size, I can guess they're very functional. I cannot believe this part is only $15, perfect fitment as expected from a GM OEM part and good quality

So many 1LE guys are against the SS brake cooling deflectors, saying the 1LE doesn't need them. It may not need them, but why not add brake cooling? Especially for how cheap they are.

Castrol SRF also seems like a better brake fluid compared to Motul RBF600 , with its higher dry and wet boiling points. I was considering to get some ZL1 brakes but I want to see if I can get away with these cooling upgrades. I really don't want to hassle, cost and additional weight if I can get away with these. Ryephile switched to ZL1 brakes at some point and mentioned that with the above mods (race pads, titanium shims, good brake fluid) OEM SS 1LE brakes would be fine and ZL1 brakes were a bit overkill. However, I have never had a brake system that I can say "overkill" so I am really curious to experience that

Speaking to Ryephile at Grattan when he tried the ZL1 brakes he mentioned that they seemed WAY over-kill without even track-dedicated pads (I think he started off running the stock HP1001/1 pads). It seems the SS 1LE brake setup is just perfect for the application (i.e. driving the car at or near it's limits, there is little margin in extra capacity, but it 100% works). |
