Owners manual contradiction about Competitive mode?

So I was reading the manual to figure out what exactly Competitive mode turns off and keeps on, if it's TCS or Stabilitrak or both etc, and ran into one paragraph that just doesn't make any sense whatsoever, the first part reads:

"Competitive Driving Mode allows full engine power while the StabiliTrak system helps maintain directional control of the vehicle by selective brake application. In this mode, TCS is off."

Alright so from this you gather that in Comp mode, Stabilitrak is on, TCS is off, simple. Then literally 5 sentences later, it shows 2 pictures of what it looks like on the instrument panel when TCS is off AND when Stabilitrak is off with the accompanying text: "These lights are on when the vehicle is in the Competitive Driving Mode." Can someone tell me what the hell is going on, or am I missing something completely obvious?

For some reason both lights (stabilitrak and traction control) are illuminated when in competitive mode, so it isn't the manual that is inconsistent but the indicators. Traction control is definitely off in comp mode, at least I've never seen it intervene, as to stabilitrak, I don't think I've needed it yet in this mode, so it's hard to tell if it's on or off.

try doing a burnout. it intervenes plenty.

In mine if it's in sport mode and you double tap the traction control button you can end up facing the wrong direction if you're not careful, going with StabiliTrac is off.

Forgot about the five second hold, haven't played much since I got it.

TCS is off and ESC (Stabilitrak) is on but in a less restrictive state when in competitive mode. That's why both lights are on.

Driveline protection (especially for the eLSD on the 1LE) and even ESC can still intervene when attempting a burnout depending on what the car is doing. If you're trying to do burnouts, all systems off (5 second switch hold) is the better option. Although, side note for the 1LE, there's a bit too much tire for the engine to repeatedly do burnouts if you're on the stock setup. You'll get 1 or 2 before the tires get too stick and you start launching/powerhopping instead.

Stabilitrack isn't meant to be a catch-all to keep you from spinning in competitive mode. It helps hold the car on the limit when cornering, but the driver can overpower it and make it spin. For instance, if you roll on throttle too quickly while coming out of a corner there's a pretty good chance you'll loop it. TC is off and too much throttle can absolutely break the rears loose causing it to snap-oversteer, so there's still a bit of driver skill involved in throttle control.

oh i’m fully aware. even on a cold night mine will fight me over it. the modes don’t matter whatsoever, track/race comp mode or not. there is only too much ecu, not too much tire. it’s very misleading. you think oh yeah the tires are hot and it’s hooking good. go launch from 2k rpm and it spins like you’re in the rain. this car is the hot, bipolar chick who loves to party, just remember that. you can only *sometimes do what you want. the rest of the time she says NO in the most dramatic way possible...and it’s always in front of your friends.

Are you trying to launch on the stock tires? There is a big difference in selection of tires, stock you will just sit and spin. Try a different tire, I did and there’s a big difference at the stop light and drag track. All depends what your trying to a compliance just a burn out, drag strip, or road course. Tire selection is paramount.

It’s all about the tires IMO

Thats the best explanation I have ever heard haha, but I have seen weird things trying to log this behavior in HP Tuners sometimes the torque reduction source will be the CCM (chassis control module), and sometimes it will be the ECM/TCM (axel), then sometimes there won't be a source at all it will just pull timing.

I also haven't been able to figure out the way the launch control reduces torque. In the logs it appears as a "RPM Limiter" which kind of indicates it is a function of the ECM and similar to how it reduces torque at the rev limiter. However, there is still something requesting a torque reduction but it appears to be a predicted source only (predicted means it uses the throttle blade to control torque, immediate means it uses timing).

If we could understand all these parameters and had access to change the CCM calibration I think we could use the launch control and traction control to our advantage. The stock launch control, especially when you have mods, just seems to bog the engine way too much. With my cam, ported heads, intake, and TB the stock launch control kind of works but it will start bucking real bad as it seems like the ECM gets unstable trying to control it, then once you take off it bogs really bad so its basically slower than when I had stock heads and stock cam.

I agree the owners manual is difficult.
I thought this was helpful.

Lololol, that's a fantastic analogy but yeah that's the downside of the car trying to protect itself; it can sometimes be over-protective and stop you from doing what you want it to do even if what you're doing won't necessarily be damaging.

Some of the MY19 Camaros have custom launch control which gives you a bit more control over all that stuff. Unfortunately it's not a nice plug-and-play solution for the 16-18 cars. Have to get updated and/or custom software made for a few different modules to get it to work, and I'm at least not aware of any aftermarket solutions for that yet :( Just stuck with the generic solution that gets you in the ballpark so it's better than nothing, but it isn't optimized for anything.
