Doesn't the GM intake cost less, come with a tune and does not void your warranty?

Since you asked for opinions I guess I will give mine....... NO WAY would I throw away my warranty by getting a tune on a stock car, that would AT BEST, see a very minimum gain from CAI and tune.

A ported stock tb and intake would be a much better bang for your buck in my opinion. Plus warranty will stay intact.

For what it's worth, I used to be gung ho on doing a cold air intake on any car 20 years ago. From what I have read now on modern cars, the intake plenum on *ANY* car build in the last 5-10 years is no less efficient than any aftermarket kit. You will never achieve greater volume of air than what the engine requires using the stock configuration. Therefor, power and performance increases are going to be minuscule at best. You'll get a louder engine note and better looking hardware under the hood, THAT'S IT.
Not worth wasting a thousand bucks on if you ask me. This will be the first car I actually keep the stock intake on and use the factory replacement air filter. |

Personally, I would stay away from the CAI intake until you were ready for other mods. However, if you must buy one, buy a Roto Fab or a model that requires no tuning. Dont go tuning on the car til your absolutely sure that your ok with tossing out the warranty. I do like the idea of the GM CAI with the tune that is warranty safe per GM. If GM had a model for the ZL1 Id buy one. Also, dont let anyone tell you that " mods " wont affect your warranty as long as you check with your dealer first. If you have to make a claim, all the vehicles info will go to GM and they ll make the call. The dealer will be secondary at that point. I cringe when I see people tuning practically brand new cars still under warranty. Major components on these cars are pricey to repair

How does this work for us new owners? If you roll into the shop with a rotofab on your under warranty car will they tell you to pound sand if there's an issue they can blame the intake for?(as silly as that sounds) Also why does the GM performance intake require a tune but roto doesn't? |

If someone will post the tune from GM for a CAI I will compare and post the differences.

My personal experience with GM and a CAI intake goes as follows. I had a S & B CAI installed on my 2012 Duramax. I started getting a emissions related CEL. I took it back to my dealer and they denied my claim due to the CAI. They claimed the intake and the increased air flow was somehow related to the emission issues. The long and short of it was I had to argue like a M FER but eventually, GM agreed to cover it. The only condition was that the dealer remove my S & B and put the OEM airbox back on the truck. After it was all said and done, the dealer told me if I would have brought the truck back in with the OEM airbox installed on the truck there wouldnt have been a issue no matter what the ECU codes were. So, my point is dont let any manufacture or person tell you that a CAI intake will not void a warranty. If the warranty claim is a big enough dollar amount, GM may twist the circumstances in its favor to deny the claim. They attempted to do that to me, but, I guess I threatened enough and got nasty enough for me to get my way. |

The Chevy Performance CAI comes with a tune for whatever reason that GM determined that it needed not to void the warranty. The GM CAI is made by Cold Air Inductions but has a GM part number. They say the tune was for increased airflow or emissions or something. Not real clear info from them about it. The Roto Fab CAI uses the stock tuning unless it’s the Big Gulp Roto Fab which does require an aftermarket tune. My advice to the Op is to buy the Chevy Performance CAI to keep his warranty unless he wants to void it because ultimately that’s his decision to make!

https://www.camaro6.com/forums/showthread.php?t=551288 So, slightly lower airflow (3-4%) at any given MAF frequency than with the factory tune. This implies a slightly lower air velocity in the intake on the CAI. This will result in a little more fuel when the ECM is using the MAF table to set fueling. No difference when the ECM is using the speed density table and likely negligible difference in PE mode. Ain't no way I'd flash my ECM (non GM tune) for just that. I'd still like to see the actual GM CAI tune file if anyone has it.

geaux_tigerss, those figures are for the V6 GM CAI not the one for the V8!

as far as I know, the only thing the tunes do is change a constant that deals with the maf so it is correctly reporting the air flowing (since that number is dictated by the diameter of the tube the sensor is placed in and it assumes a certain uniformity in airflow across that area)
What you may get without it are codes thrown from being too lean (more air is getting in than the sensor was expecting) |

The GM “tune” is nowhere near a street/dyno tune from a shop. The GM tune is limited to adjustments necessary for emissions compliance.
