The good and the bad about getting a new four post car lift...

I've been dreaming of getting a four post car lift since I started loving cars in my teenage years. Unfortunately that was never an option back then because we didn't have a garage nor did I have disposable income for the lift itself. Fast forward thirty years or so, now I have a new four post lift that I absolutely love. My garage only has a nine foot ceiling which works out well for me because I'm in a wheelchair which means I don't need to lift the car as high as someone that'd be normally standing underneath my car.

I mainly bought the lift so I can do all my service work on my Camaro which I always enjoy. No one does service work like I do mainly because I'm very picky about doing everything in a surgically clean kind of way. I can also clean the underneath of my car which is also relaxing to me. Unfortunately though, now I can see the damaged areas where the morons at the dealership jacked up the car on the wrong jack points for service work. It absolutely astonishes me that GM techs sometimes have no clue as to how to PROPERLY lift a vehicle w/o doing body damage.......

Very nice lift!

Wow, that's really careless of whoever jacked up your car last! The lift points GM specifies are admittedly harder to get to than most cars, but still.

Yeah, and unfortunately I bought the car used like three months ago. This means I have no clue as to which dealership(s) did the damage.

Congrats on the car and the lift! I have a 9 foot ceiling and had doubts about the fitment of a lift. It looks perfect in your garage.

It seems like most techs fail to lift our cars properly. That damage is unfortunate.

My particular situation makes my nine floor ceiling okay for a lift. Remember, I'm in a wheelchair so I don't need the car raised as high as someone that would normally be standing. I actually first thought about getting a two post lift but I have no idea what the PSI rating is on my concrete floor. I'd have way too many nightmares thinking about what bad things could happen if I installed a two post lift and the concrete were to give way.

So not only is a four post lift much safer, it also doubles as a two car stacker if need be.

That damage looks strange for a lifting incident. Almost looks like a pulling incident, like pulling on a frame rack or pulling out of a ditch or something, the way the metal is torn outward. You might think about trying to get that welded up.

Totally agree with this. If it was due to lifting, the damage would go inside. Not pulled like on the pictures.

Not a normally spot to pull if there are frame damage so I tend to say the same as above, car was stuck and they used that to get it out.

There have been a few forum members post similar damage on cars hauled on a flatbed truck where the operator tied the car down incorrectly.

i've always been curious on doing this setup in a garage. i honestly don't think it would be crazy bad for me to be sitting down and be underneath the car. If you don't mind me asking, how much did this cost?

Curious- what are the proper tie down points if one were to have a car towed? Lower control arms?

OP - that's a nice lift!

Thats the fastest way to a damaged control arm and a messed up alignment.

They make special adapters that lock into the locating dowel holes in the frame that allow them to hook into the adapter instead of the alignment dowel hole. The damage the OP is showing isnt from the dealership, that is from a tow truck or someone towing and using a hook in the alignment dowel hole and ripping the hole open.

Yeah, I guess I should have been more clear on my initial post. The lifting damage is where the metal is clearly bent in. I'm pretty sure some stupid tow truck driver or car transporter thought it was okay to secure the vehicle by using the points they did.

Incompetence is the killer of all killers!

The lift is an Atlas 408SL which is supposed to be one of their nicer units. I spent $2800 on the lift itself then another $650 for installation. I love it. By the way, they do sell a regular two post lift called a Max Jack that's designed for people with vertically height challenged garages. This wasn't an option for me because two post lifts require some pretty strong concrete strength to be safe. I have no idea what my concrete strength is and I damn sure wasn't willing to risk my life finding out.
