Do all 6th gens SS have same exhaust sound?
Hey!
I'm looking to buy a 6th-gen Camaro. I have never had a Camaro before. Coming from two Mustangs GT ('10 and '15), I gotta say that I have finally realized that Camaros are more attractive than Mustangs, and I have become obsessed in having one. So, do all 6th-gens sound the same (except ZL1)? I once heard a 2SS, and man, its stock exhaust sounds better than my Borla S-Type catback on my '15 Mustang. Do people really prefer custom catback or axleback on their Camaros? And do 2014/2015 have an aggressive stock exhaust sound like the 6th gens? Chev > Ford Thanks for having me here. |

Get an SS with NPP and you'll be happy if you want aggressive exhaust sound... I couldn't imagine buying an SS without NPP... Not only for the sound, but the look of the 4 pipes...

to the forums, Hammond. Not sure about stock sound on 5th gen Camaros (for some weird reason, I can only recall hearing ones with aftermarket exhausts, heh), but the 6th gen is clearly superior in every way except for giving up an inch of rear seat legroom. I wouldn't even consider buying a 5th gen in 2020.As 2SS Capt said, there are two main types, with dual-mode exhaust (NPP) and without, and the former sounds way better. Another advantage of NPP is that it's integrated with drive modes and the infotainment module, so you can control it via the mode switch or customize on the settings screen. I for one am completely satisfied with it, but there are quite a few who want it even louder or less raspy, and if one plans to go aftermarket anyway (Borla, Corsa, AWE, MBRP and lots of other options), getting an NPP car in the first place makes less sense. Some aftermarket exhausts retain the NPP control valves, but the majority don't, and those that do (e.g. the Borla S-Type and ATAK) are typically much more expensive.

Once modified, all of the V8 Camaro's sound extremely similar. The mufflers themselves can give it a slightly different tone but, the rasp will be there.

Agree with everyone else so far that NPP exhaust is the way to go!

Yes. 1SS or 2SS makes no difference.
SS 1LE(1SS or 2SS) and the ZL1 come standard with NPP. Standard SS(1SS or 2SS) have to add NPP as an option.

OP - I'll pile on the dual mode (NPP) wagon. A 6th Gen with NPP is what I recommend.
I owned a gen 5 and the stock exhaust sound was good. I took it from good to hot damn excellent (most of the time - see my last comment) when I made it a cam/bolt on car with a full ARH header/exhaust system with DMH cutouts. WOW = RACECAR when the cutouts were open! I now have a gen 6 with NPP and I love the car and the sound. Its just right - loud enough when I want it and quiet when I'm cruising. All my neighbors and friends love the sound and can't believe it's factory stock. The car overall is superior to my gen 5. As much as I loved my first Camaro and its aftermarket sound - it did get tiresome at times when cruising. BTW - I did stick with the factory mufflers after the cam/headers but blew the baffles out of the mufflers! So then I went full ARH and got cruising drone.

Here's my opinion OP. LS motors generally aren't the sexiest sounding motors on the market. They may sound mean, they may sound pissed, but they don't sound overly sexy. (not always, but I'm generalizing) I feel that the GEN5 SBC (the new LT line of motors) sound better than your GEN3 and GEN4 SBC. (the LS motors) I also feel that while Coyote is a good sounding motor it's not as nice sounding as the Modulars that predated it. Cars like Terminators, and SOHC Modulars with good exhaust setups sound better than Coyotes and dare I say Voodoo's. (oh chit! Yeah I said it. Voodoo sounds bad ass, but it ain't sexy sounding. Kind of like a cammed LS7)
These are my opinions of course, but here's another coming from someone who owns and has owned several Camaros and Mustangs/Fords and Chevys: -If you hold no bias towards either brand, the main reason to buy a GEN6 Camaro over a GEN6 Mustang is the Alpha platform is way better than the S550 platform. Pretty simple, but really nothing new. I look at S550 the same way I did Zeta. Overweight and too budgeted. In fact the Zeta and S550 seem like very similar platforms to me. Going back to both cars inception the first 4 gens the Fbodys were superior platforms. Sure Foxbodys and SN95's get a lot of love because they're lightweight and house a ton of motor, but compared to the GEN3/GEN4 Fbody's they are loose noodles riding on suspension setups that are at least 2 or 3 levels below what the Fcars road on. Same holds true today except the Alpha is lighter and better in every way from a performance perspective. (not from a packaging cargo and passenger erogomics perspective) The other good reason to buy a GEN6 Camaro over a GEN6 Mustangs is if you prefer manual transmissions the Tremec TR6060 is way better than the Getrag MT82. The Mustangs advantages are it's generally easier to live with on the streets. Easier to see out of, more passenger room, you feel more like you're riding on it than in it. Both LT1 and Coyote are great motors, but for big HP the Coyote seems to be easier to mod with a much bigger Aftermarket. |

When I was looking for an SS on the used market, I decided a non-NPP car was a deal killer. Wife wanted me to buy a 2019 that was in MN (Last I looked it was still listed) that had everything I wanted, color, interior, loaded on options, except it was missing NPP. Former GM fleet car (these are usually a killer deal when you know how to find them) with 450 total miles on it. Most of the warranty left. Wife hates the stripes on the 2016 I did buy, so she wanted me to get the 2019. No NPP killed it. Plus my 2016 was $6k less and only has 1900 miles on it!
Can't figure out why GM would have spec'd a fleet car 2SS with all the goodies except NPP.

Just keep in mind that the NPP exhaust only improves sound and looks - it does NOT improve performance. That’s why in the end I decided against it when I ordered mine, and put that $1200 to the Mag Ride.
