You buy a car to drive. HUGE difference, do NOT confuse the two. This is why auto manufacturers have to either provide an easy, clear, and verifiable process to delete ALL driver data by any user at any time at an easy press of a button, or make these communication system optional on cars so people are not forced to get them with their cars to begin with. This is why I will be removing my OnStar transponder from under the dash at the dealer when I pick up my Camaro, and will refuse to sign any authorization to use OnStar. I'll instruct my dealer to not activate OnStar in writing. It should be an option. Not just the activation, but ALL of the hardware and data communication/gathering components. |

Informed people know what comes with either the car or the phone before buying, and you either accept it or you don't. I'm not here to argue your points or say you are wrong, as I agree. None of this is ok. The transparency, or lack thereof, is not ok. The inability to delete what data they've collected is not ok. however, to get rid of any data collection, you will have to sacrifice all connectivity in the car, carry no cell phone, and have no tv. all of those come with a varying degree of data collection on what you are doing or where, and they can profile that data, at least to some extent, if they want. if you want to do that, more power to you, seriously. I'm not ok with data collection, but I like the amenities that come with my technology. |

i dont care about data collection.
I care about not having control over physically cutting the car off from the internet, as well as not having control over how the car connects to the internet so no way to firewall or protect it. So i just remove the radio board. no radio, no network connection. No way for my car to get remote controlled or for people to know where it's at at all times. People think they're buying a car these days but really you're just leasing it. All of the computers that are required to be functional for your car to even turn on much less drive - you dont own anything needed to run those and never will. There's no hope of there being a third party provider of them either so when they fail and the OEM decides to stop having whatever supplier produce more of them (or simply can't produce them anymore) you're done. You'll have to gut everything electronic and re-build from scratch if you want your property to work. Having a network connection that gives that manufacturer the power to control "your" property is just one more kick in the nuts if you had any ideas about owning your car. It's not surprising why younger people do not look at and value cars like previous generations and why the entire hobby is doomed. It's just a matter of time before law catches up to technology and starts mandating the very things that are killing it in the name of safety and cost ...it's just too lucrative for lobby happy businesses like insurance companies, law enforcement, and car manufacturers. |

Eh, I don't really give a shit what they do with my data. I'm sure Att sells more of my more damning pornhub browsing data than GM shares of my driving data. I used to be all about "privacy" but i've grown to not really care. I'm going to live and die despite whatever information is available to me. As long as my financial and social security information doesn't get leaked I just don't care. Especially since if you are carrying a cell phone in your person at all times like everyone does. Whatever bit of info GM is collecting scales in comparison. If I ever want to really get off the grid I'll pop in my f-body and turn the phone off and drive where I feel.

The car doesn't know anything of consequence that your phone doesn't know, and your phone is not only able to track all the same consequential things your car tracks, but the phone tracking follows you when you leave your car behind (into the home of that known illicit substance dealer, into the motel room where your best friend's wife is waiting for you, etc.) except with high resolution cameras to potentially capture incriminating images to go along with the location and audio data. It's entirely reasonable to expect the handful of folks in the tin foil hat crew to go figure out how to fully disable the Big Brother stuff themselves if it's that important to them, while leaving it alone and simplifying the buying experience for the overwhelming mass that is the rest of the car buying market, who have yet to experience any detriments to such data collection in their vehicles, and in many cases benefit from that collection. If that's not enough, well, feel free to let your wallet speak for you when you go find yourself an eighties something or another instead of anything new. That'll show 'em. |

data wise, they're already using that to drive up insurance costs - if not to you specifically, then to your geographical location/age/sex/driving habits etc profile that dictates your insurance rates.
It's only a matter of time before they treat your telemetry data like how insurance companies treat track data they acquire from various means to cancel your policy or refuse to renew it. Then if we want to get a tiny bit more dsystopian than how reality already is, the government can order the manufacturer to lock down and disable cars within a certain radius if you happen to be protesting it for some reason ...or if you get unruly while they're rounding you up for a repeat of internment camps etc. It sounds far fetched, but it's really not. It would be done for our safety. We already hear about bill collectors being able to disable vehicles they're repo'ing and such... it's only a small slope to slide down for other debts or civil infractions or issues to cause the government or some company given such power to have that same level of control over your vehicle. i'm surprised they already dont control the speed limiter based on gps coordinates to the road speed limit. Or give police the ability to temporarily reduce or drop to 0 the speed of vehicles they're doing something around ..be it traffic stops or calls to a business or residence. If you are a good citizen, then most of the above probably wouldn't negatively impact you. But the ven diagram of good citizens and people who spend the money to have a powerful sports car only overlap for some driving - not all. The freedom to decide when it's acceptable to not be a "good citizen" is what you lose with the future of driving. Which is especially frustrating when what defines a good citizen is a measure of the lowest common denominator of driving skill and vehicle capability. |
