Still die hard ZL1 fan and owner ! The new GT500 impressed
Let me say 1st, I love my ZL1/1LE and the only car that I love more is my 1972 chevelle with a 6.0 that I still plan on turbo charging. The New GT500 was tested on the 1/4, 10.60 at 130 mph, that's great and faster than a Z06 LT4 auto. The performance world is on fire ! It's great for the market, And maybe a LT5 will come down the pipe line. Or a Z06 with 750+ Then a ZR1, But I'm good with my car.

The killer is the price (markups attached) and availability (very very limited) make it unattainable by anyone but the wealthy. It might as well be a R8 or Nismo GTR or ZR1 or a Gallardo at this point. At the price they will be going for I'd pick any one of several different cars that perform the same or better.

I wonder if the fit and finish will be any better on the 500, the 350 is not so good.

At 100k with mark ups it’s not worth it to me as I would be nodding it. If for a low depreciation value it might be a good deal as they hold their value pretty good for many years.
With that being said I will be purchasing a C8 zo6 within 3 years and I’m sure it’ll be up in the 120k range. Not buying it for an investment purpose but more for it all out performance. I so hope it’s a twin turbo! |

Even though I agree with most about the criticisms of Ford and the 'Stang variants there is nothing wrong with liking other cars from other brands.
![]() As I told my wife, I only said vows to her, but not a specific car or brand.

I won’t lie I’d love to test drive one for a week or so and see if i became bored with the DCT. Pretty sure i know the answer, but I’d try it anyway...ya know, if anyone wants to give their 500 up for a week

I'm impressed, but keep in mind that they used the base car (normal aero) on the drag strip and the CF Track Pack on the road course. The Track Pack car sounds like the one to get, but it is even more limited and will have higher ADM. This will result in most of the Track Pack cars avoiding the track. Kudos to the few that are used as intended.

ZLE is 3830 lb (6MT). GT500 is 4200 +/- (DCT Only).
For perspective, the AWD M5 with DCT is 4090 lb. If I go > 4000lb, the 4 Dr M5 gets my vote.

There's no doubt GT500 is impressive and quite an accomplishment by Ford. I don't think anyone is surprised it is faster in the 1/4 than the ZL1 given it has over 100hp advantage.
I do think the Ford's weight was a bit of a surprise and it does tamp down the 1/4 performance advantage a bit. For example, I would have expected the trap speed to be more than 4-5mph greater. But as other's have mentioned, the real test is on the track. The ZL1 has shown it can shine against supposedly more capable cars, the GM Alpha chassis continues to be a gem. If Randy Pobst thinks the GT350 is twitchy and nervous and the ZL1 is composed then how much more nuts is the GT500 going to be (and therefore harder to drive at the limit)? I would love to see an LT5 ZL1 but I'm not holding my breath. Right now Camaro is on stasis/life support and I don't think GM is interested in pumping significant money into the platform right now (because I don't think they really know what they're going to do with Camaro after 2023).

The old musclecar war had far more variety from the big three. But the cars are far better, capable and efficient than back then.
I’m not surprised the GT500 is faster in the quarter. It should be with over 100 more horsepower. I think it’s a cool car. I’m not a Ford guy though so I wouldn’t look into buying one. |
