First track day, subframe brace damage.

So despite going out with an instructor on my first day I still managed to drop the LF wheel over the backside of a curb. Experienced some minor vibration afterward on subsequent laps only under heavy cornering load to that side and decided to call it.

Car still drove perfectly straight on the 1.5 hour drive home with no vibrations.

Got under it tonight and noticed some damage to the subframe brace on that side.

Couple of questions:

Anyone have the part number for this brace?

Is it likely this is causing the vibration when turning with load on that side?

I'm having the tires rebalanced just to eliminate that as a possibility but it doesn't seem like I lost any wheel weights.

Here's the pics:

Doesn't look too bad, it bolts on, you can replace it, about $240.

Best bet - take wiz wheel to it and smooth out jaggies in case you working under car you don't liberate any blood.

If you went off LOW enough to hit sub frame, you probably bent a wheel on way back onto the road way.

The aluminum piece (which appears to be 23379353) is definitely bent on that side. I'll probably just replace it if it's only $200. If the new piece mates up perfectly then that alleviates any concern that the chassis was tweaked.

Regarding the wheel I can't believe if it was bent that I wouldn't feel any vibration at 80+MPH on the highway. I think I didn't turn back onto track until I'd already passed the curb. When I pulled the wheel today there was zero visual evidence of any scrape or impact at least.

Brakes looked good. No other damage I could find other than the outer rubber aero piece under the splitter was torn a bit at the outer edge.

Didn't Al say that if the car was damaged on track that they would replace the damage parts for free? As long as you have an unmodified car that is.

I'd say take it to the dealer and let them fix the damages then. Im uncertain if anyone has tried to do so. Minus the guy who had his air bags deploy on track.

That cannot be true, I guarantee that if I cause collision damage on track nobody but my track insurance will cover it.

If your car has a mechanical failure or malfunctions in any way covered by the GM warranty, and you don't have any warranty voiding mods, then you are covered (unless you have M6 and mis-shift too low and over-speed the motor).

If you break anything in a crash, slide, or other type of impact causing damage like the OP, it's on the driver not GM.

Look for runout / wobble on the wheel when they have it on the balancer.

Do you honestly believe this to be true?

Al is speaking of damage to the drivetrain (motor, tranny, differential). If you drop a wheel or incur body damage, that is on you!

I'll have them take a look, I find it hard to believe the wheel was damaged as there is zero vibration at anything other than high G's to that direction. I feel like a bent wheel would be felt at normal driving conditions. I did notice there was a very slight scrub mark on the inside of that LF tire where I pulled it back onto track over the back of the curb, but it's extremely superficial to the eye at least. I understand it could have some internal/belt damage or something though so we'll get it checked out.

My current plan:
  • Purchase/replace the bent aluminum subframe brace
  • Replace the rubber aero strips under the splitter that I trashed
  • Take the car to 3R again and have them check alignment and suspension components as well as the wheel bearing on that wheel if possible
  • Have 3R check balance on all 4 track wheels (factory wheels/Goodyear 3R's)

Just put my street wheels/Michelin PS4S on and the car drives perfectly straight, zero vibrations of any kind, but again I can't exactly pull high G turns on the street either.

I would not expect the warranty to cover damage due to my lack of driving skill, either.

My car had its first four wheel off Thursday with my 18yo learning the car. Low speed spin but up over a tall curb. Was waiting for the crunch of the aluminum front stiffener. Luckily no damage.
