Post USB Port Fast Charge

Does anyone knows of a way that I can upgrade my 2018 Camaro USB port 2.0 to 3.0 and how can I make it so that it fast charges any phone but that it doesn't lose the ability to data transfer? I've been doing my research on this but haven't found anything regarding the USB port.

Wow that's a biggie. Guess you would have to get the schematics for the car and trace the USB port you want to convert to find the hardware card that supports that outlet. Then you would have to access it and find out what type of card it is then purchase the 3.0 card for it. Then convert the plug to a 3.0. Seems like a lot of work to charge faster. I would assume without any insider information the card is standard hardware. Maybe a better way is to purchase a "fast charger" that you can plug into your power outlet instead of using the USB.

On dpevans's note, this charger or its aluminum counterpart is a 99% flush fit, small enough to flap the cigarette lighter back on top of, and supports fast charging: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

How would you get it out, or is that not really a concern? Sometimes I use that slot for a dash camera.

As said above, the easiest solution and cheapest would be to buy an OEM fast charger for the power outlet/cigarette lighter and be done. I use the wireless pad but I keep an OEM fast charger for the power outlet, USB cable and a power adapter for the wall in my glove compartment, so I am covered. If I want to fast charge, I can just plug into the power outlet.

I don't see any point in making the port USB 3 but making it so I can fast charge my phone is on my list of things to do after I finish screwing around with the spectrum lighting. You could probably also make a fast charge cable and leave the rest alone.

Removal is not too difficult, I can grab its top rim with my fingers, there is a millimeter or so between the outlet and the rim. As I said, it's only a 99% flush fit, which actually helps here.

EDIT: did some closeup shots for you. The fit isn't absolutely perfect, but almost, basically as best as it gets at the moment.

Hi guys and gals, on this note - kinda - the wireless charging pad is almost useless - but i could see charging a portable battery pack there.

Any idea what battery packs might be compatible with the Camaro wireless charging pad? I did some searching but am a little confused. Some of you more tech savvy folks may have skinned this cat already.

Even with a mophie pack on the iphone it tends to use up battery life and the pad would/could be a good place to charge a battery for charging the phone or a light, camera, etc., using a portable battery.

Thank you so much! That is perfectly imperfect!

Regarding changing the USB ports to a different one that supports USB 3.0. I believe it's not possible without losing some functionality, the USB module connects directly to the aux module. I believe the USB module is also what allows CarPlay to work, so if you changed it to just a USB 3.0 I think you'll lose CarPlay and the aux.

Here's my post on replacing the USB module with a OEM one

Here's images of the module itself and its casing

Here's images of the boards inside

if you want to retain data but benefit from the higher current ratings of usb3 charging, you would need a powered usb3 hub. This can connect to your car's usb2 port and the car's battery, look for 12v amazon usb3 hubs and just cut the adapter wire and splice it into the car's accessory wiring

Then you can plug the usb cable that goes to your stock bulkhead port to the usb3 hub.

keep in mind, usb3's spec is 900ma, so unless you find something that is going way beyond spec, that's just shy of 2x the USB2 spec of around 500ma. Dedicated charging and current above that will vary from one manufacturer to the next but you wont get "Fast/super charge" rates like you get from dedicated chargers thru a data connection.

This one looks to have the same profile, but is cheaper and offers dual USB outlets. I'm picking one up to keep in the car for when I need a quick top up. Otherwise, I'll use the slow charging built-in USB for Android Auto.
