Absolutely Destroyed, Damaged, Broken, Differential

Hey guys,

So last night this ... happened. I swear I only gassed it hard enough to go up a short on ramp, but I did give it some juice in computer controlled shifting.

The car is bone stock besides a rotofab air intake. I’m in disbelief. Car has 38,600 miles on it and was in to Chevy to ALREADY have its fuel injectors replaced about 2 months prior.

Is this covered under warranty? I know I have Powertrain intact.

I don’t see how it wouldn’t be covered! That freaks me the heck out!

WOW! That is ridiculous. These cars are supposed to be performance cars. They should take some spirited driving without falling apart at less than 40K miles. I just got mine out of the shop for the TC shudder at only 3600 miles. My diff makes the groaning noise on the first cold turn or two. AND, now I see stuff like this and hear about fuel injectors having to be replaced too! I tell you guys, going back to a mopar is starting to look better and better to me. My former Challenger Scat was solid as a rock. And yeah, you should be covered under warranty for sure!

@Mgsouthwest2001 @DWR I am also shocked. I don’t know how I’ll ever be able to trust stock parts again. Hopefully this will all be resolved without any issues and they’ll just give me a whole new rear diff.

It’s important to note I had not heard any differential groan before this, and no tech mentioned anything to me.

@Mgsouthwest2001, after reading about this, you should replace your differential fluid now. Or take your car to the dealer if you hear the groan, as it could be a sign of possible future failure or leaks! Look into it!

Looks like you had the bolts holding the half shaft back out on you and possibly sheared them off when getting on it. Pretty common problem on early model 16s. I believe there is a tsb for it. I'd take the rotofab off just to be on the safe side some dealers just look for ways to get out of doing warranty work.

I agree with Puddin (god that sounds wierd). Axle shaft popped out after the bolts backed out. May be savable.

Thanks for the answer, unfortunately the car is already at the dealership as that is where I had it towed. I will sue before they get away with claiming my rotofab was the cause.

And you might be right, as I picked up the 3 bolts that flew out (I could see them in the rear view mirror bouncing around as it blew) and put them in the car for the dealer to see. One of them was bent, and the bracket was still attached to 2 of them

I wonder how many people this has happened to. I just don't understand how any bolt could back out that has Loctite on it, especially one as important as those bolts. Well, I better make it a habit to check the paint marks on the bolts and hub..... as I doubt any dealer would do this as preventative maintenance.

Wow, very informative! Thanks guys! The dealer texted me today to say I broke my axle but so far the differential seems fine... they’re still inspecting to be completely sure. Says full coverage under warranty. Any thoughts?
