That is one of the biggest reasons I designed the intake plug set I am using.
It really can't get sucked through.
I wasn't satisfied with many of the things I found for sale.
I also wanted a relatively smooth surface on the interior so as not to create turbulence.

The tubing caps that some vendors sell which fit over the outside of the inlet tube spigot are acceptable as long as you put a hose clamp around them.
For example- https://www.mcmaster.com/6448k37 (in EPDM rubber)
There isn't all that much pressure (or suction as the case may be) on the intake in a normally aspirated system with an air filter after all.
And of course if clamped these will properly seal against air flow, which is the whole point.

I will delete mine eventually, hopefully by installing a CAI. Deleting the sound tube on the Miata made a huge difference in livability with the car.

Well put.
That is the key takeaway here- livability
I like the engine and mechanical noises actually.
I just don't like someone's cheezy idea of them being shoved in my face.
I don't care for ambient road and traffic noises either, so I have added a fair amount of sound padding as well.
It is now a very nice place to be for the couple of hours every weekday I am in it.
And yet it will still bark if I want it to.

Just remove it and plug where the hose connects to the firewall and intake tube. Costs nothing and cleans up the engine bay also no fake noise, just pure LT1 sound.

Did the same last fall but mine are 7/8" I.D. and fit the firewall and snorkel pretty tight, used a wire tie to make sure. Being made from silicone they will endure harsh hot environments. I got a bag of twenty five on Amazon, needed 25 like a hole in the head but for $12 it solved a problem and I'll find uses for them around the garage. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Edit: Disregard my 7/8" comment I often forget my car came from the dealer with a GM CAI installed and the elbow is different.

Yes, it all depends upon how stretchy the cap material is.
Silicone is typically excellent in that regard.
The ones I provided a link to will need to be compressed slightly to seal on the intake tube (hose clamps work perfectly).
Regardless of how you do it, as long as you stop airflow in or out of the intake tube without anything being sucked in, and stop the propagation of noise through the firewall, it's all good.

I went ahead and deleted the sound tube this weekend. The benefits that made the most difference to me were:
1) reduced cabin noise enhances stereo sound, particularly from the front A-pillar and center speakers. This was immediately noticeable to me.
2) There is now a greater difference between the cabin noise for Sport and Touring modes. I have the NPP exhaust. Since there was never a way to turn off the induction noise, it is pretty easy to understand why deleting that would make it easier to hear the differences in the exhaust modes.

I used the Hillman 1" plugs which I found in the boxed fastener area of my hardware store. It is Hillman #54179-C. The caps have a Christmas tree-like configuration and have plenty of lip to prevent being sucked in. I loosened the intake end enough to get the 90 degree fitting off, put the cap there, and re-crimped with some diagonal pliers and screwdrivers. Plenty tight to hold it. On the firewall fitting, the cap was not that snug, so I dabbed a bit of black silicone on the edges to hold it. I'll be able to get it off should I ever want to reinstall the tube.
