Tire damage
I just found a nail in back tire, might have been there a while as it's a very slow leak. It's in the grove between treads so I couldn't really feel or hear it untill I visually inspected my tires today due to slightly lower tire pressure than the other tires.
I plan to go just get it patched later, but sometimes I read something enlightening on this forum. Any reason someone wouldn't do this and would just get a(2) new tire(s) instead?

You will probably get comments about only patching the tire in the "safe repair zone," but you don't sound like the type that would do otherwise. Personally, I still plug tires with this type of damage (nail puncture), and I know that is viewed very unfavorably in some circles. |

Why did they ever stop using tubes in car tires?

I'd patch it, but I would not race the car, and you should avoid high speeds until it's replaced.

I greatly prefer to patch punctures.
The process of plugging them tends to cause more damage to the tire cords. Just my opinion. And of course you really should not patch or plug a tire with a puncture larger than about 1/8" or thereabouts (opinions vary). I recently had a puncture and slow leak similar to the one the OP described. I patched it using a radial tire patch and the result was excellent. My tires have lots of tread left and I do not race my car, so replacing the tire was not necessary. They stopped using tubes in radial tires mainly due to their greater sidewall flexure. The tube can abrade against the insides of the tire and also can lower heat dissipation. However, this is only true when non-radial style tubes are used in radial tires. There are special radial tire style tubes which are OK to use. And of course TPMS sensors and inner tubes do not play well (you can have one or the other but not both). I have never seen tubes that can work with TPMS.

Tire must be removed from wheel and patched from inside.

Tire

I'll go ahead and patch it since the tire still has plenty of life left and just refrain from any high speed shenanigans until I replace them (which depending on how long the nail's been there I've probably inadvertently done already lol). The 305's look mean but I fear the day I need to replace all 4 tires! lol

A proper patch on the inside cost me $16 last time on a Z rated tire...it's very affordable to the point that you shouldn't even need to consider a plug repair. But repairs can be fickle, some they will and some don't meet their envelope of repairable.

A tire shop can advise you Robby if it can be patched. If it can’t then they won’t do it. I had a couple of tires in the past that couldn’t and I was told they wouldn’t even try after checking the tire. Something about a liability issue for the tire store.

high speed where a plug would be a problem isn't anywhere in the range you can reach on most highways (low triple digits).
centripetal force isn't going to remove it and rolling friction isn't going to budge it. Slamming on your brakes right on the spot where it is might do something, but if you're doing that, you're already in trouble and a tire losing pressure is only going to be an additional headache. I'd think most people who are tracking their car dont track it using their daily driving tires....that's just a fast way to waste rubber. Plugs should be totally fine between 0-100... |
