Why would you have to change your oil more often running E85?

Because you get corn kernel residue that slips past your rings in the combustion chamber and go's into your oil feed system.

so how many miles do you recommend changing it? if its 2000 miles Why would GM say nothing about changing it more often in their flex fuel vehicles?

Unless you have e85 seeping into your oil (which you would have bigger problems) I'd stick to every 5K. I've never had a problem using that time frame, and I'm using Motul.

Toyota for example requires the oil interval to be cut in half when you use E85. (tundra) from 10k to 5k miles.

The rule of thumb is to change your oil twice as often with E85.

Your OLM may not be calibrated to E85 so I would not rely solely on it.

For $25 I'd do a UOA after 4k miles

i’ve seen a few blow up around here. they were not “flex fuel” engines, more like ls7 strokers and 4g63 motors making 600+ hp. nonetheless, i would err on the side of safety and not let the oil change go beyond 3k miles, tops.

Sounds like a step up to thicker oil would be a better solution if it’s getting too thin at any point during the interval. Not an oil expert tho

Just funny the trucks that share the same engine architecture don’t specify any oci modification for e85. That being they have to cover a 100k mike warranty on what could be used as a commercial work truck

Just keep an eye on the oil itself - it will turn dark a lot quicker on E85. I ran E85 in my sierra and it would usually be almost black by 5000miles. About 7000 on gas.

Who in their right mind pays for a high performance vehicle and puts in low energy fuel that reduces horsepower? Maybe a Prius is in line?

Color has nothing to do oil life.

Many manufacturers recommended change engine oil more often with E85. Im guessing that because ethanol attracts water, which increases acid formation.

Id ignore OLM and go 3K ~4k in summer and 2k~3k in winter with synthetic motor oil (ofcourse depending on how you drive and how cold it gets.)
