Is my car consuming oil too quickly?
2018 SS 1LE with 3800 miles currently. Bought brand new with 8 miles on the ODO. I drove it home and practiced appropriate break in procedures. Dealer changed the oil at 500 and again at 2k miles. I looked at my oil left on my computer and it's stating 61%. That seems a little high for only 1800 miles. I don't flog my car that often. Highway driving mostly with occasional spirited driving. I use rev matching 95% of the time. Was planning on changing the oil again at the 3k mile mark (~5k miles). I just find it a little peculiar that so much oil has already been used. Any comments?

You're not looking at oil level when you see the percentage.... that is the percentage of "life" left in the oil that is in there. There is only a low oil level sensor on the cars. Use the dipstick to figure out what the level of oil is..

basically, what Glen said.
also, the oil life monitor uses several calculations to determine oil life remaining, time being one of them. If you don't drive your car very far, but it just sits there, the oil "life" will go down. |

The answers you got are spot on. However, the oil life to zero should be about 5k miles as I understand it. All of my Chevy vehicles would get close to that many miles before getting to even 20% or so.

What others have said. Use the dipstick to check the level, the readout to check life. I have 12,000 miles on my SS 1LE and have not had to add any oil between changes.

Did the dealer reset the oil life? I've had that happen before.

What sucks is alot of dealers who have these cars sitting on the lot for extended periods (over 6 months) are selling them between 30% and 0% oil life with like 30 miles on the odo and refusing to change the oil, instead they just reset the counter.
