Dealer charging $400 labor for brake change

Hi all,

My dealership quoted me $200 per axle to change the brake pads. Includes rotor resurfacing. This amounts to $400 for all 4 brakes. I have the pads, this is just labor costs.

Is this a normal price for the Camaro SS? I'm located in NYC.

I’d do it myself for that price. Changing the pads is almost as easy as taking your wheels off.

Good to know. But why do folks reply like yours? Maybe he has 1 or many reasons why he can't. Did you consider that? Never fails. Regardless how easy the work is. Maybe you missed the part about resurfacing the rotors? Yeah, all of us can do that-easy as removing the wheels. Are you set up for that too?

Just curious.. where did you get your rotors turned and how did they turn out? I haven't had good luck with that in the past.

I'm not sure about him, but local to me here in south florida NAPA auto parts does it for about 10-15 bucks for each rotor for normal customers and all the local auto shops around here.

To the OP, that seems pretty average to me, especially in NY...
For 100 bucks a wheel, for pad replacement and cut rotors.

Most mechanics shops charge 125 an hour labor. If you have the patience to learn, it is pretty simple to do yourself and you can even get a lot of loaner tools for free from places like autozone. you pay a deposit and then get the money back upon return.

I'm an electrician and charge 75 bucks just to come to your house without even touching a tool so I understand that shit just cost money lol

Sometimes cheaper to replace rotors than resurface.

If that dealer price, not bad, if jobber shop, on high end.

That breaks down to $80 for the rotor re-surfacing, $320 for the brake job labor. 3.0 labor hours I think? So that's $107/hr labor rate. I'd say that is a fair price, for NYC.

EDIT: I will say that the brake pad job on this car is easiest of any car I have owned. If you can turn a wrench, you can change these pads.

I got mine done at O'Reilly's also, which is the only place I could find that still machines rotors. I had a ticking sound after that (I suspect the runout was not quite right) and replaced with new rotors -- problem solved. This was on my '09 Saturn Outlook w/ 100k mile rotors.

People reply like that because they are trying to be helpful and save people some money. A lot of people are under the impression that certain automotive work is difficult and immediately assume they will be unable to do it themselves. But often times, it only takes a few hand tools and a bit of research to accomplish yourself. And where there is specialized equipment required, as has been pointed out by others, there are shops out there that can provide that specific service for you or can even loan the equipment to you.

I'm struggling to understand why you would be offended by people trying help each other out?

Everything is more involved these days including now the jacking points and the jacking pads, etc, etc. Besides my Camaro I have a diesel truck. The motor is huge but you still can't see it!!!

At times I find it a curse that I put my self through school working on cars. Sucks being out in the cold garage when your nearing 60 years old. All in all $400 isn't so bad. Arn't these Brembo pads harder to find and more costly??
