Parking brake failure

Anybody experience this? Couple times in the last few days I've got an icon show up, yellow P, circled, with a wrench below it. Pretty obvious it's telling me the parking brake is messed up. And sure enough, when it lights up, the parking brake is considerably weaker than normal. Not completely non-functional, but maybe 20% or so, not enough to keep the car from rolling unless the incline is *very* shallow.

So, anyway, it's happened a couple times, and then goes away and the parking brake goes back to working just fine.

I'm not too familiar with the mechanism on these cars, anybody have any idea what could be going wrong? I'm probably stuck having to take it to the dealer, but if that is in any way avoidable I'd love to know.
