GM Patents Active Rear Wing that Can Widen and Contract

https://www.gminsidenews.com/article...iden-contract/

If you want to keep up with the rest of the supercar industry these days, you’ve got to be playing around with active aerodynamics. And now GM is primed to throw its hat in the ring with the catchily-named “variable-width aerodynamic spoiler assemblies and control logic for motor vehicles.”

Essentially, the patent outlines GM’s new extendo-wing, which allows either side of a rear spoiler to extend, thereby improving downforce over the back end. The really novel feature, though, will be the wing’s ability to move actively and independently through a corner.

That means, that not only can a car fitted with the wing add more downforce to the whole back end, it can also move just one side of the wing to add more downforce to, say, the right rear tire specifically.

I'll take that accurate mouthful over the kind of linguistic gymnastics oh-so-clever people in Congress go through to make some catchy name for their latest legislation.

Besides, GM/Delphi used one of the longest and most awkward words around when they started with "semi-active magnetorheological dampers" and got down to MagneRide, so I'm sure they'll figure something out!

It is a cool idea, though.

From the look of the pics in side, that will be for the new G8 corvette, not the first year cars but the later models.
