Hi all,

I’m looking for input on an economical helmet for track events. I’ve only ever used the loaners at autocross and track events. I’m not very picky on the helmet, just want something that is within regulation and economical for a couple track events per year and perhaps some autocross events sprinkled in. Both of these are SA2015 and have good reviews on Amazon, but wanted to see if anyone here had experience with either one? From past threads that I’ve seen, most people just recommend to test fit if possible (which I unable to) and make sure it’s SA2015. From the two below, the Conquer is lighter, vented and cheaper so I’m thinking of getting that one.

Also, I read that the next standard will be issued in 2020. Does that mean any SA2015 purchased will be obsolete in 2020? Or is there a period of time that SA2015 will still be accepted?

2010 will be obsolete in 2020... you'll have plenty of years left on a 2015.

Also, for a few extra bucks check out the newer G-force REVO. I just got one the other day since my SA2005 has now expired.

Don't know if you've looked into the HJCs, but they offer a pretty nice yet cheap one as
well (CL-17). Now, it's not going to be as nice as the G-Force but its also quite a bit cheaper.

There is another option from Conquer. Pricewise it's between the two you linked, but it is also vented and for me it was really comfortable right out of the box:

I should add that like shoes and gloves, when you are buying a helmet, you really should make a trip to a store that carries the helmets you are interested in. I see you are also in Maryland, so you might try OG Racing (ogracing.com) out near the Dulles airport.

Thanks, do you know of a store in the area that stocks Conquer helmets? It doesn't look like ogracing has them.

Sadly, I do not. I bought mine after using an open-faced loaner of the same type.

I have this helmet, and it is very nice for the price. Works very well with glasses/sunglasses.

I bought a couple of these a little over a year ago, one for my wife, and one for me. We've both been very happy with them so far.

Something worth thinking about with a helmet purchase is the availability of spare shields (tinted, clear, etc) and parts... It's always a good idea to try them on, but like seats, if you don't live near a bigger race supply shop it can be hard to do.

Snell has different standards for MC (M) v. auto (SA). Many track organizations will not allow you to use an MC helmet for auto racing.

My point was that it being a motorcycle helmet does not preclude it from being a viable option. I am aware of the different ratings, which would require anyone to research the track organization they run with to see if a M2015 will work or if a SA2015 will be required. Either works for autocross. The track org I run with allows both.

Not trying to be a jerk, but if you know there are different standards, why would you reply with the above?

If someone is shopping helmets for tracking a car, it doesn't make sense to purchase an M rated helmet. First, there are different design standards. Snell impact testing standards for M v. SA are different, and SA includes flame resistance, which M does not. M helmets are also not going to have provisions for HANS.

An MC helmet is really only a viable option if you already own it, and you're tracking very casually. If you're serious about tracking your car, eventually you're going to want to run an event with an organization that only allows SA helmets and actually has tech inspections. At which point you'll be SOL, or buying a second helmet.

Again, not trying to be a jerk, but if folks are looking for advice, half an answer is a disservice.
