That’s the biggest drawback to the manual - I have to run out and start it, then run back in and finish getting ready. It’s only a few seconds in the cold, but remote would be so nice.

Start car in garage = instant brain damage follows by death a few seconds later... according to studies in the interwebs.

Don't have a garage so I don't need to worry about CO, but if I did I was taught to open the door, start the car, and pull out, then worry about anything else like warming things up. On that note, I let it settle into the low idle before driving off, while I let the heated seat and steering wheel warm me up, which works pretty well. I also like that the auto climate control won't blow air at me until the engine is above a certain temperature, so I'm not getting a blast of cold in my face - better the still cold air inside than blowing cold air.

Be very careful with the bad fumes.

holy geez what a tragedy.

Little off topic but a recent tragic carbon monoxide story: There was a single engine airplane crash in our area a couple weeks ago that killed 4. There was a licensed pilot, a student pilot and two non-pilots on board. Initially, they thought the licensed pilot had a heart attack. The student pilot made an emergency radio call stating that. It was dark and the student crashed in an open field trying to make it back to an airport. The toxicology report subsequently showed all 4 of them had high levels of carbon monoxide. Likely a crack in the exhaust manifold at just the wrong spot allowed CO in through the cabin heat being selected on.

Good time to be checking the CO detectors at home too.

Opening the garage door starting the car and then leaving is never going to hurt anybody.

The issue is if you left it running for quite some time then a warm house tends to suck cold air in and with that air is the CO. I lent my generator to some folks. Their house was so old and loose that it pulled the exhaust in and set off the CO detector. During power outages I leave my generator in my garage but my CO detector is right near that entrance yet my home is newer construction and is very tight.

Summarizing,be careful but don't be paranoid. A car running for even up to 10 minutes isn't probably going to hurt anybody.

Put a CO detector near the door that goes to your garage and rest easy.

Insulate and add a heater to your garage. I added insulation to the garage door (my walls were already insulated and dry walled), and a basic plug-in oil-filled radiator set on high, and the garage and car stay pretty warm. Enough so that the heat is warm as soon as I start it. Plus you get a tax credit for adding insulation.

All my garages have had some heat plumbed in as basic part of the HVAC system, I start the car and it shows 55 degrees, back out and go.

I bought a carbon monoxide detector for my 2 car garage last year with a digital readout. You would be surprised how high and fast the levels go up even with the door opened.
