Stupid question

Are the primary cats on a SS the same as on a zl1? Wondering how much hp they can handle.

My father has a zl1 and we looked up part numbers. I don't know what the difference is but they use two different part numbers between the SS and zl1

I believe the diameter of the pipes are slightly different. The ZL1 is a little larger.

Just trying to see how much power they can take. I was looking to supercharge and really don't want to do headers

I have run a stock SS exhaust for about 15,000 mile with a whipple supercharger at 570whp without any issues, but the exhaust is the bottleneck.

I will soon be installing a P1X and keeping the stock manifolds but will use JRE off road mid pipes that remove the cats. I think most have found that this gets you close to the performance of headers without actually having them and is a decent compromise.

https://www.phastekperformance.com/A...3010-11096.htm

since this bolts up to both SS and ZL1 cats, and we know that aftermarket shorty headers bolt to the other side of the primary cats, there can't be very much difference between the ZL1 and SS cat, as least in terms of tube size and dimensions. The factory header is like 2" or smaller at the collector... FYI.

I'm sure there is Less of the blockage in the zl1

I guess I want the best of both worlds. I want more power but want to change as little as possible and keep some form of cat. Even swapping out stock cats to high performance ones is a very pricey thing to do. That is not going with ceramic cats I know they're cheaper then metal ones. Plus welding I figure just about as much as a full header would cost. Gotta pay to play I guess

Then why run two part numbers? If they are identical in every way?

Maybe one has a better heat tolerance and is a tad MORE restrictive. There is say 5 hp with a cat delete, how much is there between two stock cats?
