car burned 8qts oil in 3k miles
Ok so heres a list of short points about my car
- cars full bolt on's with 31k miles -Car would misfire from cylinders 1,3,5 so i changed my plugs and wires to msd plug wires. That didn't stop the misfire which would come and go. - Swapped my o2 Sensors and the problem is gone - my friends keep complaining of oil burning smell and I told them its normal - went to check my oil levels and I had to top my oil 8 qts in 3k miles. The car runs fine but the oil burning is obviously a problem. I've had this problem for a while now that I think of it because i get an oil change every 3-4k miles and every time I go in for the change, they tell me my oil was extremely low any advice would be really awesome, Thanks in advance!

oil burning is not normal. Even GM will warranty a motor at 1qt per 1000 miles. Oil burning smell. Maybe you have a oil leak. you put in a cam? maybe when the valve seals were put in they were damaged.

Thanks for your quick reply ! I did not put in a cam. All I have are headers , Intake and ported manifold with flex fuel. With my car being tuned I can’t imagine the dealership giving me warranty for my car.

Have you looked for leaks?
That would indicate whether it's either leaking, or being burned. Too bad on a car abt 2 years old. |

I don't know nothing about engines, but a 2017 burning oil sounds like a warranty claim.

Are you sure 10 quarts are going in during each oil change?

highly doubt you burn 8 qts in 3k. you are leaking it somewhere ....if you were burning it, youd have blue smoke like crazy.....and yes, no warranty for this due to your tune and mods.

You can take all that shit off your car, revert to stock and try your luck st the dealership — even though if they read your ECU they’ll see the flash counter. This is clearly disingenuous and wrong. If you go with non-GM performance power adders then you have to pay to play.
You can also find a dealership that is mod friendly— they do exist and would likely help you out as long as your mods weren’t a direct contributing factor to the problem. I wouldn’t immediately say your warranty is shot but it is more likely than not unless you can find a friendly dealership with friendly service techs. Look on the corvette forums and you’ll find a list of mod friendly dealerships, hopefully there’s 1 within a reasonable distance. It’s kinda hard for me to give you an idea of what could be going on without knowing more details and seeing your car. Very hard to burn 8qts in 3-4K miles without it being very noticeable. So, you (or someone for you) has been under the hood and under the car swapping plugs and O2 sensors - did you find the underside dirty and streaked with oil residue?
I would think 8 quarts in 3k miles is going to create some evidence somewhere. If leaking there has to be a mess somewhere on the bottom side along with some serious oil stains on the ground where you park it. If burning oil you would see a big blue cloud behind you especially when you get into the throttle.

For powertrain, this no longer exists. The first shot in getting powertrain warranty approved is the dealer sending a snapshot of the calibration file to GM. Without GM's approval, the mod friendly dealer would be doing the work for free, meaning they don't get reimbursed by GM for the repair. OP, we need more history on this. Is this a result of the cam and recalibration? Did the car run fine with no oil burning prior? There are only two ways oil gets out. Through the cylinder during combustion or past a seal. If it's leaking past a seal, your garage should look like a CSI crime scene. And as pointed out, you would look like the guys rolling coal with their diesel pickup trucks if you were burning it. This is wayyyyyy past normal consumption. As pointed out, GM has typically used 1 qt per 1,000 miles (I've heard 750) as abnormal consumption. Unless someone screwed up the valve seals when the cam got replaced, I can't think of anything that could cause a quart every 400 miles. I had a 74 Vega GT that burned a bit more than that, but that engine was a disaster. Valve seals or piston rings are the main culprits in oil getting into the cylinder for combustion and neither should have been bothered by a cam swap. Good luck!

8qts in that time frame you'd see it on the ground or copious amounts of blue smoke out the tailpipes which tells me OP is BS'ing

yes i'm sure! I had valvoline change my oil before. It's a drive through oil change spot which I provide them with 10qts of mobil-1 and a filter. I literally see them pouring the oil in while i'm in the car. After my car kept reading dry I changed the oil myself to make sure 10qts are going in.
