Wheel and tire set up for Autocross/track days

I apologize if there's already a long thread or sticky somewhere but I've searched and searched.

I'll be saving for a dedicated set of wheels and tires for Autocross and some track days at MSR or Eagle Canyon and wanted to get some opinions. (Brands, sizes, results and lifespan.

I've done a few seasons before in previous cars (Evo X and 2010 SS) but I'm sure things have progressed in the last few years. I'd like some rubber that will last at least a season of autox (We have NTAX and ER here in DFW so 20 events total if possible).

I have a 1SS 6M stock so tire selection that would keep me in the stock SCCA type of classes would be great. Budget TBD but I'm not cash strapped or made of money so economical choices are great.

A few of us in here have put on some Apex wheels, bolt pattern is the same, offsets are a little off but can be worked with. They are great wheels, lightweight and strong and you'll still have leftover money for tires haha. I paid 1250 for a 10.5 square setup back in the spring. The hub bore is a little bit different, but you can get a set of rings and you're golden.

As for AutoX tires, if you have to be 200TW or above, the RE71R's are nice. They are sticky as heck for a few laps, fall off pretty hard after that. I like NT01's for track but they take some warming up.

I've seen several people mention the RE71Rs so I think it's safe to start my search there. I used a squared set up for the Evo to make the tires last a little longer and I'm sure rotating them around with the Camaro will help save the life of them a little. Thank you for the feedback.

Keep it coming!

You can't go wrong with the RE-71R as an autocross tire - it's the most popular for those who are competitive in autocross. I hear they overheat at track days on a heavy car, but it is still a good track day tire. I loved the RE-71R for autocross and track days on my Miata, and I do see them on a lot of heavier cars at track days.

If you are willing to sacrifice a little autocross lap time to get something that will last longer and deal with the heat of a track day session, get the Hankook RS-4.

Your idea of staying street/stock class is a good one, but it limits your wheel choices. In SCCA, I believe you need wheels in OEM widths and close to OEM backspacing (1/4"?), but you can drop an inch in diameter to 19". I decided to give up on street class so that I could run a square set of 18" wheels.

I don't know all the wheel options for street class - that's a subject worth some extensive research on your part. Your cheapest option would be take-offs from another SS, which will net you a set a of street tires too, but the big downside is that the OEM wheels are heavy. I think it's a shame to miss out on the chance for significant weight reduction in the wheels when you have the chance, but don't bust your budget.
I looked on the Tire Rack website for 19 or 20" wheels in 9.5" width, and then looked within those results to see what can be paired with an 8.5" front wheel. There appear to be some wheels at reasonable prices. 19" Enkeis are pretty light and moderately priced - they could be a good choice, if the offset is right. I don't recall OEM offsets for the SS, but the street class rule limitation on offset is an important consideration for you.

Here are a couple links to threads about street-class 6th gen Camaros:

These cars come stock with 20s. What size wheels do most purchase for track wheels? I noticed Apex only has 18 and 19s. 18s should have more tire options but i feel the wheels may look off on a car with 20s on stock.

Other than Apex, who else offers good 18 and 19" wheels?

Anyone have photos of 18s on this car?

20’s on any sports car look too big if you ask me. There is a reason all internationally sanctioned sports car race cars run 18’s still. I think 18’s look RIGHT on our cars. Give me the smallest wheel possible that fit over brakes.

The Apex wheels I’m running are BMW offsets.. they’re identical bolt pattern to Camaro. Apex started offering “Camaro Fitment” after they found out we were using them. My 18’s are Arc 8 18x10 et25, my 19’s are EC7’s 19x10.5=et22. I ran OEM studs for a while with a 5mm spacer. Now have ARP’s studs up front. OE studs in the rear.

should 18x10 et25 front and 18x11 et44 rear fit on the camaro?

seems like the fronts should as that what you have but what about the rears?

i'm sorry, but i have never had any idea as to what this offset stuff means. i should probably do some research...

Here's my car last weekend with 275/40/18 tires on 18x10 ET25 Apex FL-5 wheels, 5mm spacer in the front, using extended thread lug nuts.

Sorry OP, I think you are interested in stock/street class, so you'll want 19 or 20" wheels in OEM widths.

Thank you Roostie and Provoste. I'll definitely stick with 19 inch wheels for now. Thanks for the stud info anyways. I had a stud sheer off at an event in my Evo and the entire right rear wheel walked off and thankfully lodged in the fender. I spun a little but it could have been worse
Nice to know what the options are for stronger studs.

Roostie I think I'm going to follow Race2win's advice and start saving for this set up:

"However, here is what I'm really excited about...I'm absolutely in love with these wonderful Forgestar CF5V's in Gun Metal Gray! 19x8.5", 25mm offset, and right at about 22 lbs (yes about the same at the TRM C4, but remember this is a bigger wheel), wrapped in 265/35-19 Bridgestone RE-71R tires. I could not be more pleased with how they turned out"

Thanks for the links!*

Maybe what you want to do, long term, is put together a big-track-only tire & wheel setup, separate from the Street-Category-legal setup that appears to have priority at this point. If/when that happens, you won't need to compromise either activity to suit the other.
