First mechanical issue with my 1LE...

Ever since day one of ownership, I noticed that the steering wheel would "click" softly while turning to the right just past center of the wheel. There was never any resistance...just that annoying click, and it would do it every time.

I just assumed that the car was new and maybe parts needed to be broken in or something like that.

A little over 4 months and 4000 miles later, it was still doing it, and at this point it started driving me insane. So I dropped the car off yesterday morning, and low and behold, I need an entire new steering column!

My dealer ordered the part under warranty and the car will be ready later today.

Has anybody else had this happen to them on their Camaro?

Mine doesn't make a 'click' sound, but if I'm not moving/1-3mph and slowly turn the wheel there is like a bump or dead spot (don't really know how to describe). It happens really quick and doesn't happen again for the rest of the turn, but it does happen shortly after center.

Yep, that's exactly when mine would "click"...turning right, just after center, and it wouldn't do it again the remainder of the turn, or when turning back to the left.

I'd bring it in Tim, it may be something serious like mine was, and it'll be covered under warranty.

Tim, it could be that the dead spot is from the electric power assist. There is a torque sensor in the steering column that notifies the control module that you are putting pressure on the wheel to turn. The module then controls the level of assist required based on which tuning setting you have chosen. It really shouldn't be noticeable so you might want to get that checked out.

That sucks.
I hope it's a pain free visit to the dealership and all turns out well.

Anybody have any issue of steering wheel feeling kind of tight for a split second (mid turn) if having to crank it right all the way real fast at "high speed" making a right turn like onto a side street for example?

I only notice it if doing real fast turn of wheel, never if just cranking all the way at low speed right turn.

I do have headers but doesn't look like anything is touching when I look at steering shaft and turning the wheel.

Just double check the headers for witness marks.
The steering shaft may be making contact when the engine is torqued under load or shifted slightly in the mounts due to turning. Static inspection may appear to be Ok, but under load/forces things may contact.

It could also be your steering angle sensor.

Some Camaros have wiring harness issues for the steering. You intermittently lose power steering... There's a TSB out there for it.

Of course, it wasn't bro.....

Not all of the parts arrived and the car wasn't ready. I got a loaner (2017 Silverado ) and they tracked the parts, they should be there today and the car SHOULD be done this afternoon.

**Update**

I Picked up the car yesterday, and it feels great! No noise at all and the handling feels razor crisp as it did before.

Overall, the Dealership service department was really pleasant to deal with, kept me well updated and was an overall great experience...go figure lol

If anybody else has the same issue, I strongly suggest taking your car in and having it checked; it could be a much more serious issue than it seems. I spoke to another of the service techs, and while he said it's not a common issue, he has seen it before on Gen 6 Camaros.

Good news man, I bet that's a relief.
