Cool! It is possible that I have a tool that can unlock a map file. I am not sure because I have never tried it. If it works on a locked one, then if I can duplicate the file and folder structure on the USB stick, then it might be possible to get the map into the car. We shall see.

As long as it isn't hashed, and it is just something simple like an INI for the installer that lists the VIN inside it, then cloning it would be pretty easy. But it has been a long time since paid updates for any electronic device were not protected by some hash or private key.

Good luck and let us know how it goes. Though any positive result will probably get this thread deleted -- so be ready to post your results on another site.

I think that if I own the car (and I do) that I should be able to put anything I want into it. Maybe I have a free open source map set that I want to install. (They do exist).

My tinkering may lead nowhere, but the absurd pricing for map updates is not something I wish to support/reinforce.

It's a usb stick that they supposedly encode to your vin. It took my car roughly 45 minutes to install. you can shut it down mid-ways and it will restart (read, restart) if you get back in your car, but it won't damage anything by restarting. It also grays out maps and a few other options while it's updating.

Nice! They mailed mine on 9/5. Apparently it's coming on a slow boat from China. They chose the slowest carrier. FedEx SmartPost. Idiots. Have to deal with FedEx and the Post Office. Says it won't be here until 9/14. This is from Tennessee to Delaware. WTH people!

Yeah. I'm not thrilled. But $3.95 for shipping. So I got the cheap route I guess.

Nitro, did it finally arrive? How did the install go?

I read the installation instructions. Seems crazy to me that you have to have the car running but parked during the whole install, and they said it takes about 50 minutes. I wonder why you couldn't just turn the ignition on, but leave the engine off? Seems a big waste to have it idling for 50 minutes, plus it's probably not great for the engine, is it?

Went fine on the ZL1. Idea behind the car running is to keep the battery from dying during the update. That could cause corruption. I just hooked it up to my battery tender and let it run without the engine running.

Found the file with the vin. But there is hashed keys. Didn't work on my second car. I have another thought that I'm going to try. Will keep you posted

Paying for map updates does suck.

At least we have CarPlay and Android Auto that support better navigation options than OEM.

I’d still like updated maps in the OEM system just in case I’m ever in a dead spot where the phone is useless.

I don't think Android Maps / Carplay use much data... but there is that. I like to keep my phone free from use while in the car unless really needed. Plus worry about deadzones... etc.

Were the files all binaries, or could they be opened with something like notepad?

Some are binaries. The one I found readable was XML.

plus, you can download offline maps for google maps, which still works with navigation.

I updated my maps because it seems to have updated the speed data as well. there are a few roads where I frequent that my car thought the speed limit was something else. It's not only correct now, but it's damn near to-the-foot-accurate of the speed limit sign.
