Oops, over rev - Cut Power

I finally did by accident and must have over revved but had my eyes on the road. The ZL1 cut power just before I shifted.

I was searching but cannot find at what RPM does the power cut out.

How many people have had the power cut out.

I am sure nothing is messed up in the engine?

Are you talking about maxing her out on the upshift?? I think the rev limit is right around 6500.

If you are talking about the money shift by engaging into too low a gear, it's my understanding the engine cannot compensate in this situation.

Sounds like you just bounced off the rev limiter. Everybody has done it, you just hung on a gear too long. Zero damage to the engine as that's what it's designed to do.

Yes, I was in 2nd and just fixing to shift when it cut power and I probably shifted within less then a second. Almost at the same time.

You need to shift earlier, try and shift by 62 to 6300. By the time you actually do the shift the engine is at 6500 rpm and ready to hit the fuel cutoff. The tach doesn't stop climbing until you actually lift off the gas.

It is the first time I have done it with 5000 miles on the car and I was passing someone. I am very good about watching the tach, but this time I was watching where I was going.

I am always worried if I hurt something

Probably won't happen again

I wouldn't worry about this one. No damage from bouncing off the cutoff here and there. It's the 'mechanical over-rev' that causes the big problems (shifting into 2nd instead of 4th at 90mph).

NICE CAR BTW. How do you like it over that GT350 you had?

it isn't an issue or problem. It is an engineered safety valve to prevent engine damage. I've hit it probably 5 times at the road course and have no lasting negative effects. Certainly it is worrisome as the car basically shuts off for a split second. My thought is the car should (in an A10) shift itself at redline instead of this abrupt shutdown. Just proceed to hit the paddle and keep driving!

I love the ZL1 probably best of the last four sports cars I have had. The GT350 was a slug off the line. It just had no torque in low rpms. It bogged something terrible , way more then the ZL1. I really liked the exhaust note for sure and the high revs. But the M3 was way smoother engine then the GT350. The M3 has a throttle body per cylinder.

Knowing what I know now, I would recommend the ZL1 over the GT350 all day long. But they have upgraded the base GT350 to be a lot closer to the R making the R not worth it.

Like stated, I wouldn't let it steal your joy even if it does happen again...I know I've wrongly worried about hitting the limit thinking I was in auto but in manual & haven't really given a second thought once I come to my senses knowing the rev safety was in place.

Hell, we gotta hit close to it going wot in auto & you know GM has to worry about the masses of us ding-dongs out here & saving their motors amigo.

Don't sweat it!!

Thanks man. Ford saved me from buying one since their dealers around here were all thieves charging $15-30k over sticker. I paid FAR under sticker for the ZLE, and love this thing. Was curious from an owner of both if my suspicions were right. APPRECIATE the confirmation!
