Cold start tick, normal or not?
I know there’s quite a bit on this, but I was hoping I could get an opinion on this.
My car has a little over 2000 miles on it, and this just showed up about a week ago, initial start up sounds normal, as soon as the idle settles this metallic tick shows up and doesn’t go away until I drive it a mile or so Here’s my video https://youtu.be/xoxZJjun94E I contacted a dealership and they told me not to worry as long as there isn’t a check engine light, and to keep driving. It does seem to me that it’s getting louder every morning but that could be my imagination. The video I posted was this morning after the idle settled |

Quite a few other threads I've read about. General consensus seems to be normal due to the DI system.

Yeah that’s what I was thinking, just odd how it just happened and seems to be progressing and only occurs on a cold start

I have a brand new, 2018 2ss, automatic. If you pop the hood, you will notice the ticking noise louder on the right side of the engine (driver's side). I took mine in today and the dealer said it could be a bad lifter. They have to take the front part of the engine off to diagnose it. I'll keep you posted.

I had this problem and it was corrected by replacing the lifters with re-designed lifters. Presumably, Gen6 engines continue to be built with good lifters. Your symptom sounds like something else. In general, hydraulic lifter engines tend to make some noise before fully warmed up. As the weather gets cooler, it takes more time to warm up. The sound in your video sounds like a typical GM small block when cold, IMO. DI engines (there's one in my wife's Equinox) have a persistent tick that is normal. The fuel pressure is ridiculously high so the DI check valves make some noise. |
