Well since it's difficult for you to say no to them you should take the first step and offer the carpool service and ask them to pitch in for the gas upfront. If they say no then sorry no ride.

Just take them on a real good ride next time. They won't ask again.

That's what I was thinking. Take one on the ride from hell word will get around that you are a nut behind the wheel. The asking will stop.

Blast Celtic music with lots of bagpipes on the stereo all the time while they're in the car

I take care of my car meticulously. I have no problems telling someone they aren't welcome in or around my car.

If they ask for a ride, simply say no. no explanation needed or given.

This is exactly why i got this car. No one believed me when I said you can't store a normal adult in the backseat until I tried to force my 200 pound 6'3 friend back there. He immediately got out. Since there's three of us I said my car is not suitable cause one person will be crying in the back. Never had to give a ride ever again unless if one of my friends bail.

Not in this day and age. Option D will get you fired so fast you won’t have time to even explain if it was a woman. Sensitive sallies out in the world.

I remember when I cared what people thought about me. But then I got a dog and a wife and another dog and realized I didn’t really care what anyone else thought. People ask me if they can drive my car, I tell them to F off. People ask me for a ride? F off unless I actually like you and then there’s no issue. I’ve had people asking for rides for years, I just say, “yeah, someday.”

Some of the suggestions here seem somewhat hostile.

But being dickish takes negative energy...

Instead, you can reluctantly agree to a ride, drive like you're missing a testicle, and keep quiet in the car. They will never ask again.

Pick the biggest person asking, and tell them to sit in the back.

You think that's bad -- in RTP North Carolina, we end up with a ton of people from California and New York who move here for work but expect to maintain their car-less lifestyle. Some of them are very stubborn about it despite our near total lack of public transportation. I've had several people from work try to nudge me into being their *daily* drive home, and I had to tell them "no" point blank. You *need* a car to live here. And I'm also not adding 20 minutes each way to my commute...

I cannot even begin to fathom how much in Uber expenses and what a limited lifestyle some of these people must have. For a few of them, I know for sure they very rarely leave a 5 mile radius of work / their apartment. Needless to say, I don't do any of my food shopping near work anymore or I'll run the risk of bumping into somebody and being asked for a ride at checkout. :P

Yes, I know cars are expensive. I know that the process of obtaining a license is sometimes hard. But people will go on for years doing this. Giving them rides is just being an enabler to their own hesitations. The older people get and the longer they can get by without driving, the harder it is for them to take the plunge. Tell em the only ride you'll give is to the DMV.
